The incumbent, Democratic-NPL Congressman Earl Pomeroy was re-elected to his sixth term, defeating Republican candidate Rick Clayburgh. Only Pomeroy filed as a Dem-NPLer, and the endorsed Republican candidate was Rick Clayburgh, who was serving as the North Dakota State Tax Commissioner. Pomeroy and Clayburgh won the primary elections for their respective parties.[1] The election was the closest for Pomeroy in all of his career as congressman until his defeat in 2010; he won by just over 11,000 votes. This was because Clayburgh ran an aggressive campaign, and was the most well-known candidate ever to face Pomeroy; he had held a statewide office for 8 years. United States Vice President Dick Cheney campaigned for Clayburgh in Fargo, North Dakota on July 29.[2] Election results{{Election box begin no change| title = North Dakota's At-large congressional district election, 2002[3] }}{{Election box winning candidate with party link no change |party = North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party |candidate = Earl Pomeroy (inc.) |votes = 121,073 |percentage = 52.41 }}{{Election box candidate with party link no change |party = Republican Party (United States) |candidate = Rick Clayburgh |votes = 109,957 |percentage = 47.59 }}{{Election box total no change |votes = 231,030 |percentage = 100.00 }}{{Election box hold with party link without swing |winner = North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party }}{{Election box end}} References1. ^{{Cite web |url=http://web.apps.state.nd.us/sec/emspublic/gp/electionresultssearch.htm?cmd=Search&searchType=STATE&electionDate=06112002&showMap=N |title=North Dakota Secretary of State |access-date=2010-11-05 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110518205956/http://web.apps.state.nd.us/sec/emspublic/gp/electionresultssearch.htm?cmd=Search&searchType=STATE&electionDate=06112002&showMap=N |archive-date=2011-05-18 |dead-url=yes |df= }} 2. ^Cheney visits Fargo 3. ^http://clerk.house.gov/member_info/electionInfo/2002/2002Stat.htm#34 External links
