Horace Matthew Moulden-Colton (14 July 1898 – 30 April 1988)[1][2] was a British trade union leader. Born in Leicester, Moulden-Colton left school at the age of thirteen before completing a short apprenticeship in hosiery knitting. He spent four years fighting in World War I, but returned to knitting and became active in the Leicester Hosiery Union. In 1921, he became a collector and workplace leader for the union, and two years later he was elected to its executive.[3] In 1928, Moulden-Colton was elected as secretary of the Leicester Hosiery Union, one of the country's youngest union leaders.[3] As leader, he focused on trying to bring all the various hosiery unions together into one national body. He worked closely in this with Jack Brewin, leader of the Ilkeston Hosiery Union.[4] In 1945, Moulden-Colton finally succeeded in persuading the unions to unite, forming the National Union of Hosiery and Knitwear Workers, and was elected as its first General President. In 1960, he was also elected to the executive committee of the International Textile and Garment Workers' Federation. He retired from all his posts in 1963.[5] He died at a nursing home in Leicester, a few months shy of his 100th birthday.[6] References1. ^1939 England and Wales Register {{start box}}{{s-npo|union}}{{succession box|title=General Secretary of the Leicester Hosiery Union|years=1928 – 1945|before=Jabez Chaplin|after=Position abolished}}{{succession box|title=General Secretary of the National Union of Hosiery and Knitwear Workers|years=1945 – 1963|before=New position|after=George Dearing}}{{succession box|title=Chair of the General Federation of Trade Unions|years=1944 – 1946|before=Albert Taylor|after=Frank Dickinson}}{{end box}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Moulden, Horace}}2. ^England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007 3. ^1 Richard Gurnham, A history of the trade union movement in the hosiery and knitwear industry, 1776-1976 4. ^Hugh Armstrong Clegg, A History of British Trade Unions Since 1889: 1934-1951, p.37 5. ^International Textile and Garment Workers' Federation, Bulletin of the International Textile and Garment Workers' Federation, vols.10-20 6. ^England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1995 6 : 1898 births|1988 deaths|British people of World War I|General secretaries of British trade unions|Presidents of the General Federation of Trade Unions (UK)|People from Leicester |
