The site is located in the east of the Arad valley and overlooks the Qinah nahal. In ancient times, forts were established there to control the wadi road, linking Judea to Arabah and the territory of Edom. It was mentioned as Qina by Josephus in book 15 of his Antiquities.[1] Citations1. ^{{cite journal|last=Mittmann|first=Siegfried|year= 2006|title=Die Hellenistische Mauerinschrift von Gadara (Umm Qēs) und die Seleukidisch Dynastische Toponymie Palästinas|journal=Journal of Northwest Semitic Languages|publisher=Department of Ancient Studies: Stellenbosch University|volume=32|issue=2|language=de|issn=0259-0131|page=32}} 3 : Ancient sites in Israel|Prehistoric sites in Israel|Former populated places in Southwest Asia |
