Hénin is an important major Belgian noble family,[2] an important branch was titled Prince of Chimay. Family connections were made with important Spanish noble families, amongst them the house of Borja and the house of Velasco.

The surname comes from the town of Hénin-Beaumont in Flanders, currently France. in the 13th century the family grow in three different branches, the most important one the families of Hénin-Liétard d'Alcase and the branch of the lords of Bossu.[3]

The major family mausoleum ("Chapelle des Seigneurs") is located inside the Church of Boussu and considered one of the major artworks of Jacques du Broeucq.[4]
