House Party (1998) was the third House Party professional wrestling supercard event produced by Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). The event took place on January 10, 1998 in the ECW Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The main event of House Party, a Stairway to Hell match between Sabu and The Sandman, gained a degree of notoriety after Sabu sustained a broken jaw upon executing a plancha and inadvertently striking the guard rail with his chin. Sabu continue to wrestle for several minutes, at one point wrapping his heavily bleeding jaw in duct tape.[1][2] The event also featured the return of 2 Cold Scorpio to ECW after 1996 November to Remember for one night only.

Event

Preliminary matches

In the opening match, the team of Hardcore Chair Swingin' Freaks (Axl Rotten and Balls Mahoney) and Tommy Dreamer took on The Full Blooded Italians (Little Guido, Tommy Rich and Tracy Smothers). An argument occurred between the referees Jim Molineaux and Jeff Jones, culminating in Molineaux hitting a DDT to Jones for the win.[3]

Next, Jerry Lynn took on Chris Candido. Lynn blocked a superplex attempt by Candido and fell down on Candido's injured arm. Lynn applied a cross armbar on Candido to make him submit for the win.[3]

Next, Gran Hamada took on Gran Naniwa. Hamada delivered a tornado DDT to Naniwa for the win. The match continued as Hamada hit a diving hurricanrana to gain a second pin for the real win.[3]

In the following match, Al Snow took on Amish Roadkill. He thwarted the interference of Paul Diamond and Chastity by knocking them out with Snow Plows and then delivered a diving headbutt to Roadkill for the win.[3]

Later, The Great Sasuke competed against Justin Credible. Sasuke injured his knee by missing a plancha due to Jason tripping him. Credible worsened his knee by further afflicting injury on it. Sasuke made a comeback and attempted to hit a moonsault but Credible avoided it and Sasuke landed on his knee and then Credible hit a That's Incredible for the win.[3]

Next, Bam Bam Bigelow took on Rob Van Dam. Interference by Tammy Lynn Sytch, Francine, Chris Candido and Shane Douglas distracted Bigelow enough for RVD to hit a missile dropkick and a Five-Star Frog Splash on Bigelow for the win.[3]

After the match, the ECW World Television Champion Taz was being interviewed until Lance Wright interrupted him and brought out World Wrestling Federation's Flash Funk as Taz's challenger but Funk competed as 2 Cold Scorpio instead, marking his return to ECW. Scorpio nailed a Scorpio Splash but could not cover Taz for the pinfall, allowing Taz to apply a Tazmission for the win.[3]

In the penultimate match, The Gangstanators (John Kronus and New Jack) and Spike Dudley took on The Dudley Brothers (Big Dick Dudley, Buh Buh Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley). Kronus was distracted by Sign Guy Dudley and Joel Gertner, allowing Buh Buh Ray and D-Von to hit a 3D on Kronus for the win.[3]

Main event match

The main event was a Stairway to Hell match between The Sandman and Sabu. Sabu suffered a broken jaw near the end of the match and Sandman hit him with a cane for the win.[3]

Reception

Scott Keith of 411Mania praised "the Stairway to Hell match" but recommended to avoid the show.[3]
