CareerGoldie was born in Dalry, Ayrshire, where his father was a miner. He later moved to the Riccarton area of Kilmarnock where he played football for Hurlford United, when he was not working as a bonded storeman. In 1896 he was spotted by Everton. He was subsequently transferred to Celtic where he spent just over a season during which he was selected to play for the Scottish League XI.[2] His football career was extensive playing for Hurlford United, St Mirren, Everton, Celtic, Dundee, Barry Town, Millwall and New Brompton. During his married life he had 4 sons and 4 daughters. His sons Hugh and John both became professional footballers.
