Within that field, her interests include combinatorial representation theory, homotopy theory, and arrangements of hyperplanes.{{r|depdir}} She is a professor emeritus of mathematics at Arizona State University, and deputy director of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI). She was editor-in-chief of the Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, from 2001 to 2009.{{r|msri}} Education and careerBarcelo completed her Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in 1988.
