It is also known as the aliflora musk turtle or intermediate musk turtle due to its intermediate patterns on the shell.[1] For a long time, it was thought to be a hybrid between the two subspecies of the loggerhead musk turtle (the loggerhead and striped-neck musk turtle), but in 2017, it was declared a new species based on DNA research. It is endemic to the Choctawhatchee River and Conecuh River basins.[2][3] References1. ^{{cite news|title=New Species Of Turtle Is Discovered In Alabama|url=https://www.npr.org/2017/12/26/573464366/new-species-of-turtle-is-discovered-in-alabama|work=NPR|accessdate=27 December 2017|date=26 December 2017}} 2. ^{{cite article|title=Resolving Taxonomic Turbulence and Uncovering Cryptic Diversity in the Musk Turtles (Sternotherus) Using Robust Demographic Modeling; Sternotherus intermedius|url=http://novataxa.blogspot.in/2017/12/sternotherus-intermedius.html?m=1|work=Novataxa|accessdate=27 December 2017}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=https://bhamnow.com/2017/12/16/turtle/|title=Meet the intermediate musk turtle, Alabama’s newest turtle species|last=Byington|first=Pat|date=16 December 2017|work=Bham Now|accessdate=27 December 2017}} }}{{Taxonbar|from=Q48966642}}{{turtle-stub}} 4 : Sternotherus|Reptiles described in 2017|Reptiles of the United States|Endemic fauna of Alabama |
