International Children's and Young Adult Literature is a programme section of the International Literature Festival Berlin (ilb), which takes place annually in September in Berlin. The 18th ilb took place from September 5 to 15, 2018. In 2019, the 19th ilb will take place from September 11 to 21.

Section overview

From 2001 to 2018, 418 writers and illustrators of picture books, children's and young adult novels, children's poetry, comics, graphic novels, non-fiction books and novels appeared in the section. Among the best-known guests are John Boyne, Émile Bravo, Kevin Brooks, Chen Jianghong, Frank Cottrell Boyce, Kate DiCamillo, Julia Donaldson, Cornelia Funke, Jostein Gaarder, John Green, Peter Härtling, Franz Hohler, Stian Hole, Navid Kermani, Joke van Leeuwen, Judith Kerr, Jon Klassen, Paul Maar, Scott McCloud, Patrick Ness, Maria Parr, Peter Pohl, Jason Reynolds, Riad Sattouf, Axel Scheffler, Angie Thomas, Janne Teller and Jenny Valentine.

Guests of the section included Oscar recipients (Shaun Tan), Emmy winners (Sjoerd Kuyper), Booker Award winners (Roddy Doyle, DBC Pierre), recipients of the Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels (David Grossman, Navid Kermani, Boualem Sansal), Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award recipients (Kitty Crowther, Wolf Erlbruch, Sonya Hartnett, Guus Kuijer, Meg Rosoff, Shaun Tan) and Hans Christian Andersen Award recipients (David Almond, María Teresa Andruetto, Jutta Bauer, Aidan Chambers, Wolf Erlbruch, Virginia Hamilton, Roberto Innocenti, Ana Maria Machado, Uri Orlev, Peter Sís, Nahoko Uehashi, Cao Wenxuan). From 2013 to 2018, 137 books were presented as premieres.

The section's event centre is the Berliner Festspiele Theatre. The programme consists of premiere readings, workshops and various specials. The programme has included a Poetry Slam since 2010, a retrospective since 2011, the Award of the Extraordinary Books since 2012, the section opening with a writer's speech since 2014, various master classes since 2015, and a scientific conference since 2016. Workshop discussions and exhibitions are also organised. The section events were attended by 11,000 spectators in 2018. The press described the section programme as the "supporting pillar of the festival" (NZZ, Sieglinde Geisel, 2006) and "magnificent" (Andreas Kilb, FAZ, 2015). According to the section's own presentation, its aim is to enable a "status quo analysis of contemporary international children's and youth literature" (2012) and a "public presentation of international contemporary literature for young readers that is remarkable in terms of content and aesthetics" (2016). Christoph Rieger has been head of the section since 2011.

The 19th ilb will take place from September 11 to 21, 2019. In addition to the ilb's children's and youth programme, the Peter Weiss Foundation organises further series of events with children's and youth literature throughout the year, including an annual children's and youth programme at the International Literature Festival Odessa since 2015 and a poetry festival for children's and youth literature (Versfest Berlin) in 2017.
