The society was founded in 1969 by the local Muslim community and is known for President Barack Obama's visit on February 3, 2016. The society serves around 3,000 people. HistoryThe Islamic Society of Baltimore was founded in 1969, by three Muslim doctors.[1] They, and several Muslim families, met every Friday at Shaffer Hall on the campus of Johns Hopkins University to pray, discuss scriptures, and study Arabic. It was here that the idea of founding ISB started, and the organization was registered in the state of Maryland on September 2, 1969.[2] By the end of the 1970s, the society had around 100 families and was continually growing.[1][4] As the society needed a larger facility, they purchased an 8-acre lot off Johnnycake Road in 1982, where construction on Masjid Al-Rahmah was completed in 1984.[3] The mosque had a capacity of around 180 people but would be packed with 300 people on Friday prayers. In 1987, a gymnasium and a full-time K-12 primary school, Al-Rahmah School, was established with around 60 students.[4] The Al-Rahmah Sunday school was founded in the next decade and the multi-purpose hall was built in 1996.[5] The Al-Rahmah Quran Academy was opened in 1999–2000 by Qari Muhammad Zahid.[6] In 2003, Mohammed Adam El-Sheikh, who has been an imam at the mosque from 1983–1989 and 1994–2003, left the mosque.[7] Barack Obama's visitPlans for former president Barack Obama to visit the society were announced by the White House on January 30, 2016. White House officials say that it was "to celebrate the contributions Muslim Americans make to our nation and reaffirm the importance of religious freedom to our way of life", which is likely related to the combat of Islamophobia. Several people have derided the visit, such as Zuhdi Jasser, who said, "As a Muslim American I’m just insulted, this is disgraceful that this is one of the mosques — or the mosque — that [Obama has] chosen to visit", during an interview on Fox & Friends.[7] Barack Obama made the visit on February 3, 2016, marking his first presidential visit to a mosque in the United States.[8][9] 2019 ExpansionThe decision for the 2019 Expansion, also called the Phase 3 Expansion, was first made when county officials issued a mandate to remove the temporary classroom trailers, as there were too many on campus. Around 10 Al-Rahmah School classes are held in the trailers due to lack of space in the main building. To solve this, the society looked back into old unexecuted expansion layouts and plans to execute them developed. The society was given permission by the county to start the expansion, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held weeks later in October 2018. The expansion adds a library, classrooms, larger prayer areas for major events, and moves the Al-Rahmah Quran Academy closer to the main building. The cost is estimated to be around $2 million and is projected to be completed by August 2019, coinciding with the society's 50th anniversary.[4][10] "50 Strong" CampaignThe "50 Strong" campaign is a campaign celebrating both ISB's 50th anniversary and the expansion project. The society worked to collect artifacts such as old photos and documents from ISB's early past, which will be presented in a multimedia project on the society's anniversary.[11] References1. ^1 {{cite news|title=Mosque to host Obama grew from tiny gathering to influential congregation|url=http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-county/catonsville/bs-md-obama-islamic-society-of-baltimore-mosque-20160202-story.html|author1=Ian Duncan|author2=Jonathan M.
