After his service as ambassador, he worked in the Department of Homeland Security from 2017 to 2018. BiographyBorn in Virginia, the son of a land surveyor,[1] Nealon studied history at Brown University before studying at Boston College. A career Foreign Service officer,[2] Nealon held posts in Canada, Uruguay, Hungary, Spain, and Chile before assuming his post as Ambassador to Honduras in August 2014; Nealon also served as the deputy of John F. Kelly, whilst Kelly was in charge of the United States Southern Command.[3] After leaving his ambassadorship in 2017,[4] Nealon was appointed assistant secretary for international engagement at the Department of Homeland Security by Kelly in July.[5] During his time as assistant secretary, Nealon supported a policy of deploying Homeland Security agents abroad.[6] He resigned his post on February 8, 2018, due to his disagreements with the immigration policy of Donald Trump,[7] and, specifically, the withdrawal of temporary protected status for Hondurans.[8][9] References1. ^{{Cite news |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/2000/11/01/james-nealon-dies-at-74/cf63ec7b-6648-42ca-b5f6-4b82285e549a/ |title=James Nealon Dies at 74 |date=2000-11-01 |work=Washington Post |access-date=2018-06-23 |language=en-US |issn=0190-8286}} 2. ^{{Cite news |url=http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2014/02/map_of_ambassador_posts_given_to_obama_s_top_fundraisers_noah_bryson_mamet.html |title=Wanna Be Ambassador to Argentina? |last=Beckel |first=Michael |date=2014-02-07 |work=Slate |access-date=2018-06-23 |last2=Zubak-Skees |first2=Chris |language=en-US |issn=1091-2339}} 3. ^{{Cite news |url=http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/article20530437.html |title=280 Marines going to Central America |last=Rosenberg |first=Carol |date=May 8, 2015 |work=Miami Herald |access-date=2018-06-23 |language=en}} 4. ^{{Cite news |url=http://www.latimes.com/world/mexico-americas/la-fg-honduras-election-battle-20171130-story.html |title=Amid cries of 'fraud!' and clashes with police and soldiers, Honduras awaits results of presidential vote count |last=Linthicum |first=Kate |date=November 30, 2017 |work=Los Angeles Times |access-date=June 23, 2018 |last2=McDonnell |first2=Patrick J.}} 5. ^{{Cite news |url=https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/top-kelly-ally-resigns-sought-extended-amnesty-for-immigrants |title=Top Kelly ally resigns, sought extended amnesty for immigrants |last=Bedard |first=Paul |date=2018-02-09 |work=Washington Examiner |access-date=2018-06-23 |language=en}} 6. ^{{Cite news |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/26/world/americas/homeland-security-customs-border-patrol.html |title=Homeland Security Goes Abroad.
