McGivern trains at St. George's ABC, Belfast.[2][3] In 2015, he won gold at bantamweight at the Commonwealth Youth Games.[4][5]. A few months later, competing above his natural class, McGivern claimed silver at the European Youth Championships. Both these medals came when McGivern was in his first year at Youth level and, in 2016, he was controversially[6] beaten in the opening round of the European Youths. At lightweight, he won bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.[7] References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://d152tffy3gbaeg.cloudfront.net/2011/04/Boxing2018-Commonwealth-Games-Mens-Athlete-Profiles.pdf |title=Final results |date=2011 |website=d152tffy3gbaeg.cloudfront.net |format=PDF}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.irishnews.com/paywall/tsb/irishnews/irishnews/irishnews//sport/boxing/2018/04/10/news/james-mcgivern-happy-to-spread-a-bit-of-fear-after-second-round-stoppage-1299664/content.html|title=James McGivern happy to spread 'a bit of fear' after second round stoppage|first=Neil|last=Loughran|website=The Irish News}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.irishnews.com/paywall/tsb/irishnews/irishnews/irishnews//sport/boxing/2017/11/27/news/slick-southpaw-james-mcgivern-steals-the-show-on-big-night-1197847/content.html|title=Slick southpaw James McGivern steals the show on big night at Ulster Hall|first=Neil|last=Loughran|website=The Irish News}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://sportsnewsireland.com/boxing/boxing_irish/boxing-mckennamcgivern-walsh-strike-gold-in-samoa/|title=Boxing: McKenna,McGivern & Walsh strike Gold in Samoa - SportsNewsIRELAND|publisher=}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.belfastlive.co.uk/sport/boxing/boxer-james-mcgivern-ready-double-14459968|title=McGivern ready to double up on gold at Commonwealth Games|first=Gareth|last=Fullerton|date=26 March 2018|publisher=}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.irish-boxing.com/james-mcgivern-turns-attention-world-domination-following-russian-robbery/|title=James McGivern turns attention to World domination following Russian Robbery|first=Joe||last=O'Neill|date=9 June 2016|website=Irish-Boxing.com}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sport/commonwealth-games/commonwealth-games-bronze-medal-means-nothing-to-me-says-northern-ireland-boxer-mcgivern-36803185.html|title=Commonwealth Games: Bronze medal means nothing to me, says Northern Ireland boxer McGivern|publisher=|via=www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk}} External links
