}}Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Betul is a co-educational government residential school in Prabhat Pattan town in Betul district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It was established in 1993 by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Secondary & Higher Education, Government of India.[2]

Organisational structure

JNV Betul is a fully residential and co-educational school affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, with classes from VI to XII standard. JNVs are specifically tasked with finding talented children in rural areas of India and providing them with an education equivalent to the best residential school system, without regard to their families' socio-economic condition The school provides reservation as per mandate of Govt. of India, at least 75% selection of students from rural areas, maximum 25% from urban areas and fixed 33% to girl students. The admission process goes through a district-level entrance test called Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) to select 80 students out of total class V passed appearing students.[3]

History

The idea of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas was conceived by former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi. The concept of opening a JNV in every district of India was born as a part of the National Policy on Education, 1986 with an aim of providing excellence coupled with social justice. Subsequently, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) was registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. JNV Betul came into existence in 1993 when Prabhat Pattan was chosen as a site to establish by the efforts of then-Minister of Jail and Backward Class in Madhya Pradesh legislative assembly Ramji Mahajan.

Academics

Unlike any other JNV, JNV Betul has Classes VI-XII in which students usually start their JNV life at Class VI through JNVST. Additional admission can be made for incoming students in Class IX and in Class XI.[4] JNV Betul follows NVS Migration policy in which students learn Malayalam as third language and 30% students gets a chance to study at JNV Kollam in Class IX. JNV Betul has two subject streams in Class XI- Science and Humanities to choose from. As of June 2017, Shri RG Wankhede is the incharge of JNV Betul as Vice-Principal.[5]

Alumni

Alumni from JNV Betul are active for welfare of students and organize information and guidance session time-by-time. The formal alumni association was established in 2016 with the concept of connecting alumni, support students and build an unforgettable school experience through a diversity of events, programs and services.[6] JNV Betul Alumni are highly successful after the studies and now pursuing jobs and higher education in India and abroad. Website for JNV Betul alumni association was formally launched in 2017 for the welfare of current students at JNV Betul and to maintain contacts of alumni.[7]
