Jersey General Hospital in St Helier is the only hospital on the island of Jersey. It has 219 beds. Medical students are placed at the hospital by the Wessex Deanery of Health Education England.[1] HistoryIt was originally a poorhouse. The foundation stone was laid in 1765 but the building was requestioned by the military in 1779 as there was no barracks on the island. It was used as a hospital poorhouse from 1793. The building was largely destroyed by fire in 1859. Until 1868, when St Saviour's Hospital was opened, it also served as a lunatic asylum[2] FacilitiesThe maternity unit offers waterbirths.[3] Some patients have to travel to UK hospitals for specialised treatment.[4] References1. ^{{cite web |title=Jersey General Hospital, States of Jersey |url=http://www.wessexdeanery.nhs.uk/foundation_school/trust__employer_information/jersey.aspx |website=Wessex Deanery |accessdate=19 November 2018}} {{coord missing|Jersey}}2. ^{{cite web |title=General Hospital |url=https://www.theislandwiki.org/index.php/General_Hospital |website=The Island Wiki |accessdate=19 November 2018}} 3. ^{{cite news |title=Water births reinstated at Jersey's General Hospital |url=https://www.itv.com/news/channel/2018-10-11/water-births-reinstated-at-jerseys-general-hospital/ |accessdate=19 November 2018 |publisher=ITV |date=11 October 2018}} 4. ^{{cite web |title=Hospitals and emergency treatment |url=https://www.gov.je/health/hospitals/Pages/default.aspx |website=Government of Jersey |accessdate=19 November 2018}} 2 : Hospitals in Jersey|Poor law infirmaries |
