Life and careerCargill was born in Arbroath, Scotland.[1] He played junior football for Arbroath Roselea and Arbroath Woodside,[1] and made an appearance for Arbroath in the 1933–34 Division Two season as a trialist, making a good impression in a 4–2 win against Dundee United.[2] Ahead of the 1934–35 season, he went south and signed professional forms with Nottingham Forest of the English Second Division. He made only 10 league appearances in two years before dropping down a division to join Brighton & Hove Albion, for whom he scored 20 goals from 70 appearances in all competitions.[3] He moved on to Barrow, and made his Third Division North debut on 2 September 1939, playing "a capital game" and scoring in a 2–2 draw with Bradford City.[4] War was declared the following day, league football was abandoned for the duration, and his debut goal was removed from the records.[5] References1. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite book |last=Joyce |first=Michael |title=Football League Players' Records 1888 to 1939 |publisher=SoccerData |location=Nottingham |date=2004 |page=48 |isbn=978-1-899468-67-6}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Cargill, Jimmy}}{{Scotland-footy-forward-stub}}2. ^{{cite news |title=Maroons' team change |newspaper=Arbroath Herald |date=26 January 1934 |page=5 |quote=Jack Lowe has, unfortunately, had to cry off for to-morrow, owing to his injured knee, and James Cargill of Woodside will take his place.}} {{cite news |title=Dundee United meet ther masters |newspaper=Dundee Courier |date=29 January 1934 |page=9 |quote=If Arbroath can find other substitutes as capable as Cargill, who appeared at outside right for Jacky Lowe, they are in a happy position.
