The first competition of its kind, Freedman created a design contest in which a collection of engineers would consider and evaluate various design submissions without knowledge of who designed the plans. Freedman toured the site with Governor William Donald Schaefer who shared Freedman's belief of bridges that incorporated scenic and aesthetic features. [7] [8]In 2004, the state of Maryland honored Freedman by "putting his name on a new bridge carrying Reisterstown Road over the Beltway."[9] Freedman received the 2016 AASHTO Alfred E. Johnson Achievement Award for his "outstanding contribution in engineering."[10] References1. ^{{cite web|last1=Dresser|first1=Michael|title=Hogan, Board of Public Work honor State's Bridge Chief after 65 years|url=http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/blog/bal-hogan-board-of-public-works-honor-state-s-bridge-chief-after-65-years-20160706-story.html|publisher=The Baltimore Sun}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Freedman, Jock}}2. ^{{cite web|last1=Holland|first1=Liz|title=Drewer Retires for SHA after 55 Years|url=http://www.delmarvanow.com/story/news/local/maryland/2016/12/28/drewer-retires-sha-after-55-years/95909066/|publisher=Delmarva Now (USA Today Network)}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=2011 Heritage Award Recipients|url=http://eng.jhu.edu/wse/magazine-spring-11/print/alumni-awards1|publisher=Johns Hopkins Engineering Spring Magazine}} 4. ^{{cite web|last1=Thomson|first1=Robert|title=After more than half a century, bridge designer calls it quits.
