It always includes eggs, spinach and ground beef. Other common ingredients include onions, garlic and sometimes mushrooms, and various spices. It is a scramble.[1] Although the dish has been served for decades at many restaurants throughout the San Francisco Bay Area including several with "Joe's" as part of their names,[1][2] it was popularized by Original Joe's, a restaurant in San Francisco's Tenderloin District.[3] During World War II, a serving cost 75 cents.[4] When Original Joe's relocated following a fire, San Francisco mayor Ed Lee issued a proclamation calling the Joe's Special "famous".[5] As a dinner entree, the dish can be served on slices of toasted sourdough bread spread with garlic butter, or on a bed of rice or pasta.[6] It is also served as a breakfast dish.[7] Ketchup or Tabasco sauce are common condiments.[8] Variations include Italian Joe's, which includes Italian sausage as the meat component, and Mexican Joe's, which includes chorizo instead of ground beef.[8] References1. ^{{cite news | last = Oseland |first =James | title = Joe's Special| newspaper =Saveur | location = | pages = | language = | publisher = | date =October 23, 2012 | url =http://www.saveur.com/article/Recipes/Classic-Joes-Special| accessdate =December 20, 2015 }} {{improve categories|date=November 2018}}2. ^{{cite news | last =Burros | first =Marian | title =A July 4 Toast to Foods That Made America Great| newspaper =New York Times | location = | pages = | language = | publisher = | date =July 1, 1987| url =https://www.nytimes.com/1987/07/01/garden/a-july-4-toast-to-foods-that-made-america-great.html?pagewanted=1| accessdate =December 20, 2015 }} 3. ^{{cite news | last =Evans | first = Judith| title =Joe's Special is famous dish Recipe Exchange: Eggs scrambled with onions, spinach and ground beef is a classic and beloved dish in San Francisco | newspaper =Saint Louis Post-Dispatch | location = | pages = | language = | publisher = | date =September 30, 2009 | url =http://m.stltoday.com/entertainment/dining/joe-s-special-is-famous-dish-recipe-exchange-eggs-scrambled/article_1e748a69-307b-531d-bab4-403b055e46b9.html?mobile_touch=true| accessdate =December 20, 2015 }} 4. ^{{cite news | last =Severson | first =Kim | title =Eat at Joe's / In San Francisco, all roads lead to this Tenderloin original| newspaper =San Francisco Chronicle | location = | pages = | language = | publisher = | date =August 13, 2003 | url =http://m.sfgate.com/recipes/article/Eat-at-Joe-s-In-San-Francisco-all-roads-lead-2301478.php| accessdate =December 20, 2015 }} 5. ^{{cite news | work=San Francisco Chronicle | accessdate=2012-01-26 | title=Mayor Ed Lee declares today Original Joe’s Day | first=Paolo | last=Lucchesi | date=January 26, 2012 | url=http://insidescoopsf.sfgate.com/blog/2012/01/26/mayor-ed-lee-declares-today-original-joes-day/}} 6. ^{{cite book | last =Hensperger| first =Beth | authorlink = | title = Not Your Mother's Weeknight Cooking: Quick and Easy Wholesome Homemade Dinners| publisher =Harvard Common Press | series = | volume = | edition = | date =2008 | location = | pages = | language = | url =https://books.google.com/books?id=O5nf5mbpkwoC&pg=re&dq=%22Joe%27s+Special%22&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjt5bK9uevJAhUC9h4KHQoHC7gQ6AEIGzAA#v=onepage&q=%22Joe's%20Special%22&f=false| doi = | id = | isbn =9781558323681| mr = | zbl = | jfm = }} 7. ^1 {{cite book | last =Jamison| first = Cheryl Alters| authorlink = | last2 =Jamison| first2 = Bill| authorlink2 = | title =Real American Breakfast | publisher =Harper Collins| series = | volume = | edition = | date =2002 | location = | pages = 9 | language = | url =https://books.google.com/books?id=r5h8xgmwkiUC&printsec=frontcover&dq=New+American+Breakfast&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi60JS5wuvJAhXLHx4KHUx6A6oQ6AEIGzAA#v=snippet&q=now%20outrank%20all%20other&f=false| doi = | id = | isbn =9780060188245| mr = | zbl = | jfm = }} 8. ^1 {{cite book | last =Morehouse| first =Matt | authorlink = | last2 =Morehouse| first2 = Linda| authorlink2 = | title = Cast Iron Cuisine: From Breakfast to Dessert - Grandma's Skillet Reborn| publisher =Paradise Cay Publications| series = | volume = | edition = | date =2009 | location = | pages =9–10 | language = | url =https://books.google.com/books?id=Tbw3Pjmo3D4C&pg=PA9&dq=Joe%27s+Special+ketchup&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjjnJ2U3uvJAhXC9h4KHbpOAS0Q6AEIPzAH#v=onepage&q=Joe's%20Special%20ketchup&f=false| doi = | id = | isbn =9780939837847| mr = | zbl = | jfm = }} 3 : Egg dishes|Cuisine of the San Francisco Bay Area|Culture of San Francisco |
