He was an alcohol and drug user as well as an ex-member of a criminal gang. His life had been deeply troubled until he became a vegan animal liberation activist known for his sobriety. Personal lifeCarbstrong was born Joseph Armstrong.[1] A native of Adelaide, he quit school early at the age of 14[2] and developed a heavy addiction towards drugs and alcohol. Carbstrong started with cannabis when he was 14, turning to alcohol and methamphetamine at 15, and ecstasy and hallucinogens at 16, soon using cocaine, and benzodiazepines.[1] He took on various jobs in Adelaide, including one at a car factory and as a building laborer. By 22, Carbstrong's drug dependency worsened and he went on welfare.[1] Soon he became a gangster, amassing a lengthy criminal record, including three assaults. Carbstrong was kept under house arrest for 18 months.[1] Carbstrong was arrested in September 2011 when the police discovered him holding a firearm in his trousers, which he "apparently planned to take to a drug deal."[1] Police found 29 bullets hidden in a sock inside a chair lining in his motel room, along with a flick-knife hidden beneath his mattress and another inside the hood of his jacket. They also found several luxury Rolex and Tag Heuer watches. He spent six months in prison, where he had an enlightenment. Soon he decided to depart from the criminal world.[2] Inspired by the teachings of Dan McDonald, an American advocate for raw food and fasting, Carbstrong became vegan after his release from prison.[2] Carbstrong has since renounced his troubling past, stating "For 12 years of my life I went down the wrong track. I was once involved with gangs and substance use until it landed me in prison ... Please listen to my message with an open mind. Please help me, help them. As a vegan all I want is peace. Peace for humans, peace for animals and peace for the world."[3] Carbstrong describes his transition to veganism as "[he] wanted to give back. I wanted to help the less fortunate. I wanted to help human beings which is still one of my passions. But I had a realisation. There were a group of innocent beings who needed my help the most. A group of beings who weren’t even recognised by society as victims. A group of beings so persecuted, so exploited and so abused that it dwarfed any human genocide in comparison. The animals were screaming out for help and very few were listening. So I decided to answer their calls and began speaking for them with all my heart."[4] He started his Instagram account in around 2016 to spread his animal rights advocacy using social media. In May 2017, Carbstrong released a video to celebrate his completion of four years as a teetotaler.[1] Animal rights advocacyAs of 2018, Carbstrong has more than 120,000 followers on social media, including on YouTube and Instagram. He is also involved in outreach and participates in cubes with Anonymous for the voiceless. See also
