They settled in Albany, the capital city of New York state. In Albany Johann was taught by Belgian painter François Unterricht.[3] Than in 1861 he returned to Germany and joined the Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf. On 18 January 1862 he joined the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich.[4] After graduating in 1868, he returned to the United States.[2] In 1873 he decided to move back to the country of his parents and settled in Munich. He died on 2 March 1921 in Munich.[2] WorkJohann Friedrich Engel was a portraitist, painter of genre scenes. Typical portraits of children in traditional Bavarian costumes or scenes set in the Upper Bavarian Chiemgau are Fisherman at the Lake Chiemsee (1879)[5] or Return from Fishing.[3] It is known that his inspiration came from his family, for example his grandson Hugo stayed as a model for him.[6] Later works includes genre scenes. Paintings lik Congratulation, Our Grandma, Guests by the Wall, Merry Loneliness (1898) and The Secret (1901) are amongst the known ones.
