He was born in Sheffield and worked as a 'tea planter in Ceylon and a commercial turtle hunter' before moving to New Zealand.[1] He was the Auckland Star's first cartoonist, holding the position 1927 to 1952. His work appeared in Tatler, the Bulletin and Time.[2] He served in the First World War and held a number of military positions in New Zealand after the war, before becoming a professional cartoonist.[2]References1. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.cartoons.org.nz/cartoonists/john-hill|title=John Hill {{!}} New Zealand Cartoon Archive|website=www.cartoons.org.nz|access-date=2019-02-28}} 2. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://tiaki.natlib.govt.nz/#details=ethesaurus.90670|title=ATL: Unpublished Collections|website=tiaki.natlib.govt.nz|access-date=2019-02-28}}
