Previously he was associated with the UK Independence Party (UKIP); he contested its leadership in November 2016, coming third with 18.1% of the vote, and again in 2017, coming fourth. Personal lifeRees-Evans was born in Hampshire and educated overseas, including at the Jeppe High School for Boys in Johannesburg. At the age of 19 he joined the British Army Reserve, of which he was a member for five years; this included a year training with the Parachute Regiment, from which he was discharged without completing training. He now lives in Penrhiwceiber with his family and has a professional background in business, particularly adventure tourism.[2] Controversially, he once claimed that a "homosexual donkey" had tried to rape his horse.[3][4] He clarified his statement, saying that "I was asked to respond to quite a bizarre statement ... and so I tried to give the only kind of answer I knew how to give because, frankly, I do not have any experience of homosexuality, or humans copulating with animals."[5] Political careerHe contested the seat of Cardiff South and Penarth in the 2015 general election, receiving 13.8% of the vote, with a swing of 11.2% to UKIP. Rees-Evans declared his candidacy for UKIP leader on 24 October 2016.[6] He has pledged to ensure the UK leaves the EU and that the government is reduced in size and function. He believes that the current political class in Westminster is out of touch with citizens, and pledged to make politics more transparent and open if elected UKIP leader.[4] Rees-Evans differed radically from the other candidates, advocating the introduction of direct democracy first within UKIP and then seeking to use it with intention to cause massive reform of the entire UK political system.[7] He also supported capital punishment for child killers and sexual abusers of children, but only if the victims were "pre-pubescent" and looked under the age of 18 (the age of consent in the UK is 16 years), saying that 13-year-olds were "fair game for the current punishment".[8] Rees-Evans has said that he opposes same-sex marriage.[9] He was the last remaining Faragist candidate in the race,[10] which was won by the self-described "unity candidate" Paul Nuttall.[11] He walked out of tightly-controlled hustings after being told "not to rock the boat", and then embarked on a nationwide tour of membership similar to that of Nigel Farage prior to the 2016 EU membership referendum. The late Sam Gould, former chairman of UKIP's Caerphilly branch, commented: "Policy-wise he is similar to Raheem. John is a gentleman and has done so much for UKIP, helping them produce party political broadcasts and has raised a lot of money for the party, too."[10] In August, Rees-Evans announced a proposal to offer £9,000 and health insurance to Britons with dual nationality, in return for them moving to countries where they have the right to settle. They would be required to start a business and trade with the UK. This would be to help achieve "negative net immigration towards one million a year", and would be funded by cutting the foreign aid budget. He was condemned by rivals Whittle and Collins; both Collins and Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake compared the proposal to the BNP's manifesto.[12][13][14] He finished fourth in the 2017 UKIP leadership election. He later quit the party to form his own group, "Affinity".[15]After quitting UKIP, Rees-Evans joined the Democrats and Veterans party instead of forming his own party and assumed leadership of the party.[16] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.pressreader.com/uk/daily-star-sunday/20180121/281599535917124 |title=Army vets on march with new party |publisher=Daily Star |date=2018-01-21 |accessdate=2018-02-22}} 2. ^{{cite web [|url=http://johnreesevans.uk/who-is-john-rees-evans/ |title=About John Rees-Evans |author= |website=John Rees-Evans for Leader |access-date=22 November 2016}} 3. ^{{cite news |last=Dearden |first=Lizzie |date=22 December 2014 |title=Ukip Leadership Candidate Admits Mistake Of Claiming 'Gay Donkey Raped His Horse' |url= |newspaper=The Independent }} 4. ^1 {{cite news |last=Simons |first=Ned |date=24 October 2016 |title=Ukip Leadership Candidate Admits Mistake Of Claiming 'Gay Donkey Raped His Horse' |url=http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/ukip-leadership-candidate-john-rees-evans-admits-mistake-of-claiming-gay-donkey-raped-his-horse_uk_580df412e4b0fce107d142b3 |newspaper=The Huffington Post |access-date=27 October 2016}} 5. ^{{cite news|last1=Sparrow|first1=Andrew|title=Gay donkey rapists and other oddities: how Ukip keeps going off-message|url=https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/dec/22/gay-donkey-rapists-other-odddities-how-ukip-keeps-going-off-message|accessdate=18 December 2016|work=The Guardian|date=22 December 2014}} 6. ^{{cite news |title=UKIP leadership: John Rees-Evans declares |date=24 October 2016 |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-37756167 |publisher=BBC News |accessdate=27 October 2016}} 7. ^{{cite news |url=https://www.ft.com/content/a90414f2-9f55-11e6-86d5-4e36b35c3550 |title=Favourite to be Ukip leader suggests referendum on capital punishment |last=Mance |first=Henry |newspaper=The Financial Times |date=31 October 2016 |subscription=yes}} 8. ^{{cite news|last1=Demianyk|first1=Graeme|title=Ukip Leadership Candidate Wants Death Penalty For Paedophiles — Unless Victim 'Looks 18'|url=http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/ukip-john-rees-evans-death-penalty-paedophiles_uk_5818e5fbe4b0a4d17c49d3cb|accessdate=18 December 2016|work=The Huffington Post|date=1 November 2016}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/08/11/ukip-leadership-hopefuls-includes-3-lgbt-people-and-2-anti-lgbt-candidates/|title=UKIP leadership hopefuls includes 3 LGBT people and 2 anti-LGBT candidates|publisher=Pink News|date=11 August 2017}} 10. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://newmediacentral.net/ukip-leadership-latest-john-rees-evans-walks-out-of-hustings-event/|title=UKIP leadership latest – John Rees-Evans walks out of hustings event|date=3 November 2016|publisher=}} 11. ^{{cite news|last1=Fisher|first1=Lucy|title=Farage's old foe gets seat at top table|url=http://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/farage-s-old-foe-gets-seat-at-top-table-fb86kl9jz|work=The Times|subscription=y|date=30 November 2016}} 12. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/aug/18/ukip-peter-whittle-john-rees-evans-9000-to-leave-uk |title=Ukip politicians condemn leadership candidate's '£9,000 to leave UK' idea |publisher=The Guardian |date=2017-08-18 |accessdate=2017-09-24}} 13. ^{{cite web|author=Patrick Maguire |url=https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/pay-british-indians-to-go-home-says-ukip-leadership-hopeful-john-rees-evans-f06qvclr7 |title=Pay British Indians to go home, says Ukip leadership hopeful John Rees-Evans |publisher=The Times |date=2017-08-19 |accessdate=2017-09-24}} 14. ^{{cite web|author=18 Aug 2017 10:58 AM |url=http://nordic.businessinsider.com/ukip-leadership-candidate-pay-british-indians-to-leave-the-uk-john-rees-evans-2017-8 |title=UKIP leadership candidate wants to pay British Indians to leave the UK to cut 'unnecessary population' - Business Insider Nordic |publisher=Nordic.businessinsider.com |date=2017-08-18 |accessdate=2017-09-24}} 15. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-politics-41485897|work=BBC News|title=John Rees-Evans quits UKIP to form new party|date=3 October 2017}} 16. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.pressreader.com/uk/daily-star-sunday/20180121/281599535917124|title=John Rees-Evans assumes leadership of party of Democrats and Veterans|last=|first=|date=|website=Press Reader.com (Daily Star Sunday)|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=}} Further reading
