He made a series of significant contributions to our understanding of the exocytic and endocytic pathways in neuroendocrine and exocrine cells and the exploitation of these pathways by enveloped animal viruses. He has also provided the first evidence that endocytic membranes are used in the morphogenesis of vaccinia and human cytomegalovirus.[1][3] Tooze also served as Executive Secretary of the European Molecular Biology Organization(EMBO) for over 20 years and Secretary of the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC).[2][4][5][6] In 1982, he founded The EMBO Journal.[1][7] For two years he worked full-time as assistant and then deputy editor of the scientific journal Nature working with the editor-in-chief John Maddox.[5][8] Awards and honoursTooze was awarded the EMBO Gold Medal and EMBO Membership, both in 1986[9] and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1994.[10][11] References1. ^{{Scopus|id=24497540600}} {{Authority Control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Tooze, John}}2. ^1 2 {{Who's Who | surname = TOOZE | othernames = Dr. John | id = U37874 | volume = 1995 | edition = online Oxford University Press|location=Oxford}} {{subscription required}} 3. ^{{Cite journal |author1=J.
