Early life and familyJoseph Merceron was born in 1764, the son of James Merceron, a Huguenot silk weaver who later became a pawnbroker in Brick Lane and a developer of poor quality property for rent. CareerMerceron built on his father's wealth to expand the property development business. He became treasurer of the Bethnal Green vestry in 1787 and a magistrate in 1795. He was notorious for his corrupt practices.[1][2][3] Death and legacyMerceron died in 1839. He is remembered in Merceron Street in Bethnal Green.
