Fahl won the 2018 Democratic primary election against predecessor Dave DelVecchio, who had previously served as the city's mayor for 27 years. Early life and educationFahl was born in Red Bank, New Jersey and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She attended Bryn Mawr College from 2008 to 2012[1] and majored in political science.[2] CareerDemocratic political fundraisingIn 2017, Fahl served as the in-state finance director on the gubernatorial campaign of Phil Murphy, who won his election and has served as governor of New Jersey since January 16, 2018.[1] She left the campaign in spring 2017, publicly citing a "toxic workplace" under deputy campaign manager Joe Kelley. While working on the campaign, she reported Kelley to senior management three times, citing his "temper and unreasonable work demands." In a 2018 statement, Fahl reported Kelley had once angrily thrown a chair across the campaign office.[3] After the election, Kelley went on to work as a senior policy official under Governor Murphy. Mayoral campaignFahl's own political career has been compared to that of Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, the 28-year-old Democratic-socialist congresswoman-elect representing New York's 14th district,[4] though Fahl has said she belongs to "the Clinton wing" of the Democratic Party".[4] Fahl's 2018 mayoral campaign raised $10,700,[5] and she won against incumbent Dave DelVecchio with 55% of the vote.[5] Personal lifeIn 2014, Fahl noted to queer women's publication Autostraddle that few politicians and government employees prefer an androgynous clothing style.[6] In 2016, she appeared as a model in an HBO documentary, Suited, about a tailoring company specializing in gender-non-conforming clientele.[7] Fahl identifies as a lesbian, and has been married to campaign manager Kari Osmond since January 2017.
