It was built in 1871-1872 for Prussian-born Confederate veteran and Klansman Julius Freed. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. HistoryThe house was built in 1871-1872 for Julius Freed, a Jewish Prussian-born dry goods merchant.[2] During the American Civil War of 1861-1865, Freed served in the Confederate States Army's Army of Tennessee.[2][3] In the post-bellum era, Freed joined the Ku Klux Klan and the Knights of Pythias, and he continued to celebrate Jewish holidays, albeit privately.[2] He also served on Trenton's board of aldermen.[2] Freed lived in the house with his wife, née Henrietta Cohn,[3] until his death in 1908.[2] The couple had two sons, Joe, who served on the board of aldermen, and Sylvane, who became the president of the Bank of Trenton.[2] The house was refurbished thanks to a grant from the Tennessee Historical Commission in 2001.[4] Architectural significanceThe house was designed in the Italianate architectural style.[2] It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since April 5, 1994.[1] References1. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2013a}} {{National Register of Historic Places}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Freed, Julius, House}}{{Tennessee-NRHP-stub}}2. ^1 2 3 4 5 6 {{cite web|url={{NRHP url|id=94000301}}|title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Julius Freed House |publisher=National Park Service|author= |date= |accessdate=July 14, 2018}} With {{NRHP url|id=94000301|photos=y|title=accompanying pictures}} 3. ^1 {{cite web |last1=Van West |first1=Carroll |title=Julius Freed |url=https://tennesseeencyclopedia.net/entries/julius-freed/ |website=Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture |publisher=Tennessee Historical Society and the University of Tennessee Press |accessdate=July 14, 2018}} 4. ^{{cite news |title=Trenton gets fed grant for Julius Freed House |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/283899549/?terms=%22Julius%2BFreed%2BHouse%22 |accessdate=July 14, 2018 |work=The Jackson Sun |date=June 14, 2001|page=4|via=Newspapers.com|registration=yes}} 3 : National Register of Historic Places in Gibson County, Tennessee|Italianate architecture in Tennessee|Houses completed in 1872 |
