Prior to her election, Smith served on the Greenville City Council, representing District 1. When former mayor Allen Thomas stepped down, Smith was elected Mayor by the members of the Council. She served as mayor until the next election took place in November of 2017, where she won re-election to the council, again serving District 1. CareerSmith won the election on 6 November 2018 from the platform of Democratic Party.
