She graduated in 2008 from the National Economic University in Kiev and 2016 from the National Academy of Public Administration in Kiev.[1] Handziuk joined the political party "Fatherland" in 2003 and she quickly became the leader of its local youth wing.[8] In 2006, she was elected a deputy of the regional council of the Kherson Oblast and the {{ill|Kherson City Council|uk|Херсонська міська рада}} for the party "Fatherland", as well as adviser to the mayor of Kherson.[5][8] She participated in the Orange Revolution.[6] In 2012, she volunteered for the United Nations Development Programme.[7] She left the “Fatherland” party in 2015.[8] During the Kherson 2015 local elections, Handziuk was an active volunteer who helped the acting mayor of Kherson, {{ill|Volodymyr Mykolayenko|uk|Миколаєнко Володимир Васильович}}, to win the elections.[8] In November 2016 Handziuk become the acting manager of affairs at Kherson City Council’s executive committee.[8] Handziuk was a critic of the security authorities and especially condemned corruption in the regional department of Ministry of Internal Affairs. She had publicized the involvement of the police in several cases of corruption.[9] DeathA man threw sulfuric acid on her in front of her house on 31 July 2018 and fled.[17] She suffered severe burns on more than 30% of her body.[17] The Ukrainian authorities arrested five suspects.[17] The European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Johannes Hahn wrote on Twitter: "Attacks on civil society activists are unacceptable. Those responsible for this insidious crime must be held accountable."[10] Handziuk first received treatment at a local hospital but was transferred to a special medical institution in Kiev soon afterwards.[11] Handziuk died on 4 November 2018.[3][4] The preliminary cause of death was a thrombosis.[12] Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko confirmed in the evening of the same day the death of Handziuk in a Kiev hospital. He called on the police to do everything to clarify the case.[25] After the announcement of her death, there was a spontaneous mourning in the Ukrainian capital, in which hundreds of demonstrators moved to the Ministry of Interior and demanded the complete investigation of the murder.[13] References1. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.faz.net/aktuell/politik/ausland/kiew-ukrainische-aktivistin-stirbt-nach-saeureanschlag-15874757.html|title=Ukrainische Aktivistin stirbt nach Säureanschlag|trans-title=Ukrainian activist dies after acid attack|newspaper=Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung|language=de|date=5 November 2018|accessdate=6 November 2018}} 2. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/kateryna-handzyuk-dead-ukraine-acid-attack-corruption-activist-campaigner-a8617846.html|title=Ukrainian anti-corruption activist dies after acid attack|work=The Independent|access-date=5 November 2018|language=en-GB}} 3. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/nov/05/ukraine-activist-kateryna-handzyuk-dies-from-acid-attack|title=Ukraine activist Kateryna Handzyuk dies from acid attack|last=Roth|first=Andrew|date=2018-11-05|website=The Guardian|language=en|access-date=5 November 2018}} 4. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/05/world/europe/kateryna-handziuk-dies-ukraine.html|title=Kateryna Handziuk, Ukrainian Activist, Dies From Acid Attack|author=Mendel, Iuliia|date=5 November 2018|access-date=5 November 2018|publisher=The New York Times}} 5. ^1 2 3 {{cite news|url=https://www.unian.ua/society/10324443-smert-gandzyuk-shcho-vidomo-pro-aktivistku.html|title=Смерть Гандзюк: що відомо про активістку|trans-title=Death of Handzyuk: What is known about the activist|publisher=UNIAN|language=uk|date=4 November 2018|accessdate=6 November 2018}} 6. ^http://uacrisis.org/fr/69467-weekly-update-ukraine-78-october-29-november-4 7. ^http://uacrisis.org/fr/69467-weekly-update-ukraine-78-october-29-november-4 8. ^1 2 3 4 [https://opinionua.com/en/2018/09/17/assassination-attempt-against-handziuk/ Assassination attempt against Handziuk: who is suspected and what is known about the crime?], OPINION UA (17 September 2018) 9. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.tagesschau.de/ausland/jekaterina-gandsjuk-101.html|title=Aktivistin stirbt nach Säureangriff|trans-title=Activist dies after acid attack|publisher=Tagesschau|language=de|date=5 November 2018|accessdate=6 November 2018}} 10. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.welt.de/politik/ausland/article183278848/Ukraine-Korruptionsbekaempferin-Jekaterina-Gandsjuk-stirbt-drei-Monate-nach-Saeureanschlag.html|title=Säure-Opfer stirbt drei Monate nach Anschlag|trans-title=Acid attack victim dies three months after attack|newspaper=Die Welt|location=Berlin|language=de|date=5 November 2018|accessdate=6 November 2018}} 11. ^1 2 3 [https://en.interfax.com.ua/news/general/543099.html I am submitting my resignation today — Prosecutor General Lutsenko], Interfax-Ukraine (6 November 2018) 12. ^{{cite news|url=https://24tv.ua/pomerla_aktivistka_katerina_gandzyuk_n1058050|title=Померла активістка Катерина Гандзюк, яку облили кислотою|trans-title=The activist Kateryna Handzyuk, who was poured with acid, died|publisher=24tv.ua|language=uk|date=4 November 2018|accessdate=6 November 2018}} 13. ^1 {{cite news|url=http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/ukraine-aktivistin-kateryna-gandsjuk-drei-monate-nach-saeureattentat-gestorben-a-1236717.html|title=Korruptionskritikerin in Ukraine nach Säureattentat gestorben|trans-title=Corruption critic dies in Ukraine after acid attack|newspaper=Der Spiegel|location=Hamburg|language=de|date=5 November 2018|accessdate=6 November 2018}} External links
