In March 2015, Davis left Southland Publishing, Inc, the publisher of San Diego CityBeat. Davis will become a freelance writer.[5] Davis has covered California laws about sex offenders,[6][7] and has investigated San Diego's homeless situation.[8][7] Inmate deathsDavis and Dave Maass released a 5-part investigative series starting in 2013 in San Diego CityBeat about inmates dying in San Diego jails at the highest rates in the state, many of which were preventable deaths.[2][9] This series won investigative awards and resulted in new policies and training to reduce suicides.[2][10] In 2014, after the series had received widespread media attention, an inmate hanged himself while imprisoned and his widow sued San Diego county for negligence. In 2017, San Diego county claimed they didn't know about any problems with inmate deaths despite the widespread media coverage, and demanded that Davis provide her private investigative "notes, interviews and recordings" to help in San Diego's case against the widow.[2] Davis refused. Many media outlets decried the request as inappropriate and a judge ordered a stay.[2][11][4] It's been insinuated that San Diego county is trying to target or punish Davis for bringing negative media attention regarding the inmate deaths.[12][13] California right-to-die lawDavis received national attention in 2016 for an essay she wrote about Betsy, her sister, who had a "Rebirth Party" and used California's new right-to-die law to commit suicide in August 2015.[14][15] Personal lifeDavis' sister Betsy committed suicide by drug in August 2015.[16] Davis is currently fighting advanced breast cancer.[2] References1. ^{{cite web |URL=https://www.centerforhealthjournalism.org/users/kellylynndavis |title=Kelly Davis, Health Journalism Fellow |publisher=center for health journalism.org |accessdate=August 16, 2018}} 2. ^1 2 3 4 5 {{Cite news|url=https://www.voiceofsandiego.org/topics/opinion/the-countys-outrageous-targeting-of-reporter-who-exposed-jail-deaths/|title=The County's Outrageous Targeting of Reporter Who Exposed Jail Deaths - Voice of San Diego|date=2018-02-08|work=Voice of San Diego|access-date=2018-02-12|language=en-US}} 3. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/County-Lawyers-Demand-Research-Notes-From-Local-Journalist-473242543.html|title=County Lawyers Demand Research, Notes From Local Journalist|work=NBC 7 San Diego|access-date=2018-02-12|language=en}} 5. ^{{Cite news |url=http://www.sdnews.com/view/full_story/26480577/article-STREET-SWEEPS?instance=bbp|title=Top two editors leaving San Diego CityBeat|last=|first=|date=2015-02-19|work=SDNews.com|access-date=2018-02-13|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=}} 6. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.kpbs.org/news/2015/mar/02/california-court-rules-against-sex-offender-law-re/|title=California Supreme Court Rules Against Sex Offender Law Restrictions|last=Press|first=Associated|work=KPBS Public Media|access-date=2018-02-13|language=en}} 7. ^1 {{Cite news|url=http://cms.wehaaserver.com/article-8765-Thats-another-story.html|title=It takes longer than a few minutes to explain why some sex offenders need defending|access-date=2018-02-13|language=en-US}} 8. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.flipthescriptsd.org/people/2017/11/17/kelly-davis-mighty-pen-honoree|title=Kelly Davis, Mighty Pen Honoree|work=Flip The Script|access-date=2018-02-13|language=en-US}} 9. ^{{Cite web|url=https://obrag.org/2017/11/county-jail-deaths-dont-matter-in-san-diego/|title=County Jail Deaths Don’t Matter in San Diego|website=obrag.org|language=en-US|access-date=2018-02-13}} 10. ^{{Cite news|url=https://ww2.kqed.org/news/2016/08/22/when-jail-becomes-a-death-sentence/|title=When Jail Becomes a Death Sentence|date=2016-08-22|work=KQED News|access-date=2018-02-12|language=en-US}} 11. ^{{Cite news|url=https://sandiegofreepress.org/2018/02/statement-on-kelly-davis-case-society-of-professional-journalists-san-diego-chapter/|title=Statement on Kelly Davis Case: Society of Professional Journalists, San Diego Chapter|date=2018-02-12|work=San Diego Free Press|access-date=2018-02-12|language=en-US}} 12. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/opinion/the-conversation/sd-kelly-davis-san-diego-county-jail-deaths-20180209-htmlstory.html|title=Dozens of San Diego inmates dead, a journalist subpoenaed after reporting on it|last=Hamblin|first=Abby|work=sandiegouniontribune.com|access-date=2018-02-12|language=en-US}} 13. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.voiceofsandiego.org/topics/news/morning-report-duncan-hunters-undoing/|title=Morning Report: Duncan Hunter's Undoing - Voice of San Diego|date=2018-02-09|work=Voice of San Diego|access-date=2018-02-12|language=en-US}} 14. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.voiceofsandiego.org/topics/news/staff-picks-favorite-stories-2016/|title=Staff Picks: Our Favorite Stories of 2016 - Voice of San Diego|date=2016-12-27|work=Voice of San Diego|access-date=2018-02-13|language=en-US}} 15. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.kpbs.org/news/2016/aug/15/san-diego-writer-shares-terminally-ill-sisters-reb/|title=San Diego Writer Shares Terminally Ill Sister's 'Rebirth Party'|last=Lipkin|first=Maureen Cavanaugh, Michael|work=KPBS Public Media|access-date=2018-02-13|language=en}} 16. ^{{cite web |URL=https://www.voiceofsandiego.org/topics/commentary/what-i-learned-helping-my-sister-use-californias-new-law-to-end-her-life/ |title=What I Learned Helping My Sister Use California's New Law To End Her Life |date=August 9, 2016 |accessdate=August 16, 2018}} External links
