Stoner and Peter A. Conway.[3] The film was released on October 21, 2016, by IFC Midnight. PlotThe film centers on the 2007 murder of gay pornography producer Bryan Kocis (named "Stephen" in the film, played by Christian Slater), who operates from his suburban house. Stephen turns 'Brent', a wannabe underage adult performer, into a gay pornstar. Brent leaves after learning how much Stephen is making, while paying him little, but finds that his contract prevents him from working for anyone else. Rival producers Joe (James Franco) and his lover/star Harlow (Keegan Allen), keen to hire Brent and make serious money, decide they need to 'take care of' Stephen.[3] Cast
ReleaseKing Cobra premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival in April 2016.[3] Shortly after, IFC Films acquired distribution rights to the film.[4] The film was released in the US on October 21, 2016.[5]ReceptionRotten Tomatoes reports that 43% of 35 surveyed critics gave the film a positive review; the average rating is 5.3/10.[6] Metacritic rated it 48/100 based on 19 reviews.[7] Graham Fuller of Screen Daily wrote that it was "a movie of such wit and daring that it could transcend its LGBT appeal to become a crossover hit".[8] David Ehrlich of IndieWire gave it a letter grade of B+ and described it as a "rock-solid dark comedy" with an excellent cast.[9] Peter Debruge of Variety called it "all smut and no soul", comparing it to Cinemax After Dark.[10] John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter called it "a dreary would-be thriller" that has poor pacing.[11]Corrigan himself was approached about playing a supporting role in the film but declined.[12] He later criticized the filmmakers for "bastardising" his life to present an inaccurate portrayal of the murder and of his time in pornography.[13] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=kingcobra.htm|title=King Cobra|work=Box Office Mojo|publisher=Amazon.com|accessdate=October 30, 2016}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/king-cobra-884731 |title=Tribeca: Christian Slater, James Franco Explain Why They Made Gay Porn Drama King Cobra|last=Lee|first=Ashley|work=The Hollywood Reporter|date=April 18, 2016|accessdate=May 29, 2016}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/2016-tribeca-film-festival-lineup-872107 |title=Tribeca Film Festival Sets Hologram for the King, Elvis & Nixon World Premieres|last=Lee|first=Ashley|work=The Hollywood Reporter|date=March 2, 2016|accessdate=May 29, 2016}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://deadline.com/2016/07/king-cobra-movie-james-franco-christian-slater-ifc-films-1201788308/|title=James Franco Porn Murder Pic King Cobra Hooks Up With IFC Films|work=Deadline Hollywood|first=Patrick|last=Hipes|date=July 18, 2016|accessdate=July 19, 2016}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.indiewire.com/2016/09/king-cobra-trailer-james-franco-christian-slater-gay-porn-film-brent-corrigan-1201730699/|title=King Cobra Trailer: James Franco and Christian Slater Star In Gay Porn Drama|work=Indiewire.com|first=Liz|last=Calvario|date=September 26, 2016|accessdate=September 26, 2016}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/king_cobra_2016/ |title=King Cobra (2016)|work=Rotten Tomatoes|publisher=Flixster|accessdate=December 8, 2016}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.metacritic.com/movie/king-cobra |title=King Cobra|work=Metacritic|publisher=CBS Interactive|accessdate=December 8, 2016}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.screendaily.com/reviews/king-cobra-review/5102697.article |title=King Cobra: Tribeca Review|last=Fuller|first=Graham|work=Screen Daily|date=April 18, 2016|accessdate=May 29, 2016}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.indiewire.com/article/james-franco-king-cobra-boogie-nights-gay-porn-tribeca-review |title=King Cobra Is the 'Boogie Nights' of Gay Porn (Tribeca Review)|last=Ehrlich|first=David|work=IndieWire|date=April 17, 2016|accessdate=May 29, 2016}} 10. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=https://variety.com/2016/film/reviews/king-cobra-film-review-james-franco-1201755357/ |title=Tribeca Film Review: King Cobra|last=Debruge|first=Peter|work=Variety|date=April 17, 2016|accessdate=May 29, 2016}} 11. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/king-cobra-tribeca-review-887233 |title=King Cobra: Tribeca Review|last=DeFore|first=John|work=The Hollywood Reporter|date=April 24, 2016|accessdate=May 29, 2016}} 12. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2016/04/20/brent-corrigan-accuses-hollywood-of-bastardising-his-life/ |title=Brent Corrigan accuses Hollywood of 'bastardising' his life |first=Joe |last=Williams |work=PinkNews |date=April 20, 2016 |accessdate=October 30, 2016}} 13. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/movies/king-cobra-subject-brent-corrigan-says-hollywood-bastardised-his-life-20160419-go9jt0.html |title=King Cobra subject Brent Corrigan says Hollywood 'bastardised' his life |work=Sydney Morning Herald |date=April 19, 2016 |accessdate=October 30, 2016}} External links
