5 live Sport is the flagship banner of live rolling sports block on BBC Radio 5 Live. The regular presenters are Kelly Cates (Tuesday),[1] Mark Chapman (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday), Eleanor Oldroyd (Thursday), Darren Fletcher (Friday) and Jonathan Overend or Mark Pougatch (Sunday). The programme is on air Monday{{ndash}}Wednesday 7{{nbsp}}{{snd}}10:30{{nbsp}}pm; Thursday{{ndash}}Friday 7{{nbsp}}{{snd}} 10{{nbsp}}pm; and weekends 12{{snd}}6{{nbsp}}pm (although broadcast times are often extended, depending on ongoing events). It also has a spin-off edition, airing Saturday 5{{snd}}6{{nbsp}}am: 5 live Boxing, presented by Mike Costello and Steve Bunce.

History

5 Live Sport evolved from the Saturday afternoon radio sports programme Sport on 2 which started on BBC Radio 2 on 4 April 1970, becoming Sport on 5 when BBC Radio 5 launched in August 1990. The 5 Live Sport name has been used since 2006.

Format

Original format

The original format featured the major sports events each Saturday afternoon, broadcasting between 1:30{{nbsp}}pm and 5{{nbsp}}pm, with updates from the major footballing fixtures and second half commentary on a top match. The location of the commentary game would usually be revealed around 3{{nbsp}}pm. Sports Report followed Sport on 2/Sport on 5 at 5{{nbsp}}pm.

Current format

The main focus of the programme, especially between August and May, is still on the football season, and in particular the Premier League. 5 Live Sport has live Premier League commentaries on Saturdays at 12:30{{nbsp}}pm and 3{{nbsp}}pm, Sundays at 4{{nbsp}}pm, and Mondays at 8{{nbsp}}pm. They also have live commentaries from the Football League, Champions League and FA Cup. The programme also has extensive coverage of the England national team. Mark Pougatch and Mark Chapman are the main presenters. Other major events such as the Six Nations and the Ashes are also aired. In the summer, major sporting events such as the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games, Wimbledon and the Open are all given extensive coverage.
