The foundation pursues active arts and research policies while funding research and art, and it is constantly seeking and providing alternatives to the mainstream. In 2017, the foundation awarded a total of 30.5 million euros in grants and awards for bold openings in art and research. In the spring of 2018, the foundation moved its premises to the Lauttasaari Manor[2] In 2018, Kone Foundation had 14 permanent employees. The foundation is headed by Anna Talasniemi. Hanna Nurminen has been the chairperson of the Kone Foundation Board since 2002. HistoryKone Foundation was founded in 1956 by Heikki H. Herlin and Pekka Herlin, who were also members of Kone Corporation’s management team. In the early days, the foundation and the company worked in close cooperation. After Pekka Herlin passed away in 2003, the foundation became independent of Kone Corporation. Today, the foundation makes independent decisions and is unaffiliated to Kone Corporation.[3] However, the majority of the foundation's assets remain in Kone Corporation's shares, and the company’s success in the 2000s has enabled the rapid expansion of the foundation's operations. Lauttasaari ManorKone Foundation's premises in Helsinki are located in the Lauttasaari Manor where the foundation moved in the spring of 2018. The foundation bought these premises from the City of Helsinki in 2015 and carried out a thorough renovation of the manor’s main building, the Red Villa in its yard and the manor park before moving in. The Lauttasaari Manor area is a historically layered place with great cultural, historical and architectural value.[4] The manor is staffed by foundation employees, and various events are arranged there for foundation stakeholders. In 2019, a small-scale residence will be launched in the Red Villa located in the manor yard for guests invited by community actors in the fields of art and science. The Red Villa is also home to the science-and-art café Puhuri.[5] Kone Foundation aims to make the Lauttasaari Manor a welcoming space of fascinating encounters and multidisciplinary interaction in the fields of art and research. Saari ResidenceMaintained by the Kone Foundation, the Saari Residence began its operations in 2008 and is a residence in Mynämäki for artists of all nationalities. Professional artists from various fields and researchers working with a Kone Foundation grant are encouraged to apply for a two-month-long residency period to work in its peaceful environment. During summers, Saari Residence is used by artist collectives from various fields.[6] The selections for Saari residents emphasise artists whose work is innovative and current, as well as new forms of art. Hanna Nurminen acted as the Saari Residence’s executive director until 2017, after which these duties were continued by performance artist and curator Leena Kela.
