It is inhabited by majority of ethnic Serbs.[3] HistoryThe village was mentioned as Karanište ({{lang-sr-Cyrl|Караниште}}) in the Ottoman defter of 1455 of the Vlk Vilayet (Vilayet of Vuk), encompassing most of Vuk Branković's former territory. At that time the village was populated exclusively by Serbs, on the forehead with priest, living in 14 households.[4] It was included in an Austrian map based on data of 1689. See also
