Early lifeKōsuke Tamura was born on March 16, 1976, in Uozu, Toyama.[1] He won the {{ill|12th Elementary Student Meijin Tournament|ja|小学生将棋名人戦}} in 1987 when he was a sixth-grade student at Ōkubo Elementary School,[2][3] defeating fellow future shogi professional Kensuke Kitahama in the final.[4] In November 1987, Tamura entered the Japan Shogi Association's apprentice school at the rank of 6-kyū as a protegee of shogi professional Nobuyuki Ōuchi.[3] He was promoted to 1-dan in 1991, and then obtained full professional status and the rank of 4-dan in October 1995.[3] Promotion historyThe promotion history for Tamura is as follows:[5]
