Early life and familyBorn in 1941 as Lady Juliet Smith, Townsend was the only daughter of Frederick Smith, 2nd Earl of Birkenhead, a historian and biographer. Her mother was the Hon. Sheila Berry, daughter of William Berry, 1st Viscount Camrose. She grew up in Charlton, Northamptonshire.[1] She married John Townsend in 1970, and had three daughters.[1] Beginning in 1977, the pair operated a bookstore.[3] CareerShe attended Somerville College, Oxford, graduating in 1960 with a degree in English. From 1965 to 2002, Townsend served as a lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon.[1][2] Margaret had requested that the appointed person be equipped to help supplement her perceived lack of a formal education.[3] Townsend wrote a book recording "every village, church, stately home and architectural curiosity" within Northamptonshire, publishing it in 1968. Her next literary project, a children's story set during the Indian Mutiny, was released in 1971.[1] She regularly reviewed children's books for The Spectator, producing an annual guide on the year's best.[4] She held an almost forty year membership in the Northamptonshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England, and served as its president from 1988 to 1998.[5] She left the position after her appointment as Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, the first woman to hold this role. She retired in June 2014, citing mobility difficulties.[1][6][7] References1. ^1 2 3 4 {{Cite news |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/11271144/Lady-Juliet-Townsend-obituary.html |title=Lady Juliet Townsend - obituary |work=The Daily Telegraph |date=3 December 2014 |accessdate=5 November 2017 }} {{s-start}}{{s-hon}}{{s-bef | before=John Luke Lowther}}{{s-ttl | title=Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire | years=1998–2014}}{{s-aft | after=David Eric Laing}}{{s-end}}{{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Townsend, Juliet}}2. ^{{Cite press release |url=http://www.some.ox.ac.uk/news/lady-juliet-townsend-9-september-1941-29-november-2014/ |title=Lady Juliet Townsend, 9 September 1941 – 29 November 2014 |publisher=Somerville College, Oxford |date=2 December 2014 |accessdate=5 November 2017 }} 3. ^{{Cite news |url=https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/lady-juliet-townsend-00mh22hg688 |title=Lady Juliet Townsend |work=The Times |date=2 December 2014 |accessdate=5 November 2017 }} 4. ^1 {{Cite news |url=https://www.spectator.co.uk/2014/12/juliet-townsend-1941-2014/ |title=Juliet Townsend (1941-2014) |first=Mark |last=Amory |work=The Spectator |date=13 December 2014 |accessdate=5 November 2017 }} 5. ^{{Cite press release |url=https://www.cprenorthants.org.uk/whats_going_on/details/23 |title=Obituary - Lady Juliet Townsend 1941 - 2014 |first=Paul |last=Hayter |publisher=Campaign to Protect Rural England |accessdate=5 November 2017 }} 6. ^{{Cite news |url=http://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/news/new-lord-lieutenant-of-northamptonshire-appointed-by-the-queen-1-5958444 |title=New lord-lieutenant of Northamptonshire appointed by The Queen |work=Northampton Chronicle & Echo |date=25 March 2014 |accessdate=5 November 2017 }} 7. ^{{Cite news |url=http://www.northantstelegraph.co.uk/news/tributes-paid-to-only-female-lord-lieutenant-of-northamptonshire-and-lady-in-waiting-to-princess-margaret-1-6451163 |title=Tributes paid to only female Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire and lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret |work=Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph |date=2 December 2014 |accessdate=5 November 2017 }} 7 : 1941 births|2014 deaths|People from South Northamptonshire District|British women writers|Alumni of Somerville College, Oxford|British ladies-in-waiting|Lord-Lieutenants of Northamptonshire |
