In 2010 it also was the most populous locality in the municipality. It is located 161 kilometers from the state capital Morelia. EtymologyThe name comes from the Chichimeca language, meaning "the place of clothing". HistoryDuring the wars before the Spaniards arrived, this place was conquered by the Tarascan state, by the successors of Tariacuri: Hiquingare, Tangaxuan and Hirepan. These rulers, in order to ensure the payment of tribute, appointed Cupauxanti as chieftain. In the 16th century, with the arrival of the Spaniards, shortly after the conquest of Apatzingan, La Huacana became an encomienda under Juan Pantoja. In 1789 Jose Maria Morelos was the curate of the parish of Tamacuaro de la Aguacana.[2] DemographicsIn 2010, the town of La Huacana had a population of 9,395.[3] EconomyLa Huacana is the centre of the municipality's principal economic activities, which are agriculture, cattle raising and fishing. AttractionsThe town's most attractive historical monument is the San Nicolas Tolentino parish and the Santa Maria Goretti chapel. It has many traditional celebrations such as: The commemoration of the land distribution in La Huacana on 1 May, the pilgrimage of the localities in San Nicolas Tolentino on 1 September, a festival called "verbena" on the "Plaza Civica" on 10 September, and from 13-18 September the townspeople celebrate patriotic events with traditional dancing. They play guitars, violins and harps.[2] References1. ^{{cite web |title=Buenavista, Michoacán de Ocampo |work=Informe Anual Sobre La Situación de Pobreza y Rezago Social |publisher=SEDESOL |url=http://www.sedesol.gob.mx/work/models/SEDESOL/Informes_pobreza/2014/Municipios/Michoacan/Michoacan_012.pdf |accessdate=October 14, 2015}} {{Michoacán}}2. ^1 {{Cite web|url = http://www.inafed.gob.mx/work/enciclopedia/EMM16michoacan/municipios/16035a.html|title = La Huacana|date = 2010|accessdate = |website = Enciclopedia de los municipios y delegaciones de Mexico|publisher = INAFED|last = Rosales|first = David}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.microrregiones.gob.mx/catloc/contenido.aspx?refnac=160350001 |title=Catálogo Localidades |publisher=Microrregiones.gob.mx |date=2010-03-15 |accessdate=2015-10-03}} 1 : Populated places in Michoacán |
