Lajos Hanzo FREng is an electrical engineer, professor of wireless telecommunications at the University of Southampton, and was Editor-in-chief of IEEE Press.

Education

Lajos was born in Hungary and studied at the Technical University of Budapest, graduating with his Masters degree in Electronics in 1976 and his Ph.D. in 1983. He then subsequently moved to UK to be an academic.

Career

In 1986, he joined the wireless communications group at the University of Southampton as a lecturer. In 2004, he received his Doctor of Science degree.

Lajos Hanzo has also held various research and academic posts in Hungary, Germany and the UK.[1] Lajos is a prolific educator and researcher, publishing over 1200 technical papers, and co-authored over 20 technical books. His research include MIMO, OFDM, Visible Light Communications, wireless multimedia communications for flawless tele-presence, etc. He is a frequent keynote speaker at various conferences organized by the IEEE.

In 2018 he was appointed to the Board of Governors of the IEEE.[2]

Awards

Lajos was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2004.[3] He received the Sir Monty Medal (IET Achievement Medals)) in 2008. He is a Fellow of IEEE (2004)[4], Fellow of IET, and Fellow of EURASIP (2011)[5]. He received an honorary doctorate from Technical University of Budapest in 2010. In 2016, he was elected as a Foreign Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.[6]

Books & Papers

Lajos has authored and co-authored 20+ books[7] related to 3G wireless communications, voice and video compression and turbo coding. His highly cited papers are related to broadband multi-user communications and modulation.
