It is connected to the larger Lake Razelm on the north by a channel {{convert|1.9|mi|km}} wide, to Lake Zmeica on the south by three narrow channels, and separated from the Black Sea's salt water by a narrow spit of sand no more than {{convert|150|ft|m}} wide at some points along its eastern margin. This closure was completed artificially in the 1970s, and has caused the lagoon to lose all salinity, increase renewal times to over a year, and develop eutrophication.[1] It is part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. Because of their wide connection, Golovița is often subsumed under Lake Razelm in official documents. The Lake Razelm/Golovița complex is the largest lake in Romania.[2] References1. ^{{cite journal|last1=Dinu|first1=Irina|last2=Umgiesser|first2=Georg|last3=Bajo|first3=Marco|last4=de Pascalis|first4=Francesca|last5=Stănică|first5=Adrian|last6=Pop|first6=Cornel|last7=Dimitriu|first7=Radu|last8=Nichersu|first8=Iulian|last9=Constantinescu|first9=Adrian|title=Modelling of the response of the Razelm-Sinoe lagoon system to physical forcing|journal=Geo-Eco-Marina|date=2015|volume=21|doi=10.5281/zenodo.45064|url=https://zenodo.org/record/45064#.WK-K6fnyvIU|accessdate=24 February 2017|language=en}} 2. ^{{cite book|title=Romanian Statistical Yearbook|date=2008|url=http://www.insse.ro/cms/files/pdf/ro/cap1.pdf|chapter=1: Geography, Meteorology, and Environment}} 5 : Lakes of Romania|Saline lakes of Europe|Geography of Tulcea County|Lagoons of Romania|Lagoons of the Black Sea |
