Located at the Lawas-Merapok-Sindumin Highway FT1, the bridge was originally the only suspension bridge in Sarawak that was designed for motor vehicles.[1] The old suspension bridge was ultimately replaced by a single-tower cable-stayed bridge in 2014.[2] OverviewThe Batang Lawas Bridge was originally the only suspension bridge being designed for motor vehicles. Ironically, longer bridges such as the Lanang Bridge, Durin Bridge and ASEAN Bridge were all constructed as either box girder bridges, as cantilever bridges, or as girder bridges, resulting shorter span.[1] In addition, the old Lawas Bridge was only a lane wide, and the road traffic had to take turns to cross the Batang Lawas, causing severe congestion during festive season. As a result, a wider 2-lane replacement bridge was proposed as a Tenth Malaysia Plan project.[2] Constructed at the total cost of RM29.79 million, the construction started on 19 January 2012 and was completed on 18 July 2014.[3] References1. ^1 {{cite thesis |last=Ma |first=Cody Yuong Jie |last2=Chang |first2=Gary Jiing Lian |date=2010 |title=Bridge construction technology in Sarawak |website= |publisher=Swinburne University of Technology (Sarawak Campus) |quote=}} {{coord missing|Malaysia}}{{Asia-bridge-struct-stub}}{{Malaysia-road-stub}}2. ^1 Senarai Projek Pembangunan RMke-10 Kementerian Kerja Raya - Accessed on 2016-03-05. 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.theborneopost.com/2012/05/22/state-gets-rm166-million-for-20-road-projects-this-year/ |title=State gets RM166 million for 20 road projects this year |author= |date=2012-05-22|website= |publisher=The Borneo Post |access-date=2016-03-05|quote=}} 1 : Bridges in Sarawak |
