The company is considered a leader in this field.[2] The portfolio includes reader chips, transponder chips and software and services to manage ID systems. LEGIC products conform to ISO Standards ISO 15693, ISO/IEC 14443, ISO 18092 (NFC) and the prime RF standard. LEGIC maintains a global network, currently with over 300 licensed partner companies. Based on the LEGIC technology platform, these companies develop a multitude of ID systems with applications such as staff work time logging, access controls, biometrics, e-payment, parking, ticketing and other multi-applications. The company has its roots in the «LEGIC IDENTSYSTEMS» business division of Kaba AG in Wetzikon which was created in 1990. In 2002, the business division was converted into an independent limited company. In 1992, LEGIC was the first company to present a contactless and secure Smart Card technology for access controls and other identification applications on the frequency of 13.56 MHz. Products and servicesAs well as consultation for end users and support for licensed partners, LEGIC offers the following products and services: Reader chipsLEGIC reader chips conform to ISO Standards ISO 15693, ISO/IEC 14443, ISO 18092 (NFC) and the prime standard. The LEGIC 4000 / 6000 series also supports cryptographic functions of transponders by third party suppliers. When developing its reader chips, the company focuses on small dimensions and a low energy consumption. Transponder chipsLEGIC advant is the most advanced transponder technology in the company. advant technology is available as a chip or applet for NFC smartphones and bank cards and is compatible with ISO standards 15693 and 14443. Up to 4096 bytes can be stored on it and up to 127 applications can be combined. Industry standards, such as AES, 3DES and DES, can be used to encode the communication channels. LEGIC prime is the predecessor technology of advant and is still widespread. Software and servicesThe Master-Token System-Control security concept links the controls of an ID system with a special, physical smartcard and is intended to guarantee system operators have autonomy when it comes to choosing suppliers. LEGIC also offers software to manage applications and authorisations in an ID system. LEGIC Connect is a secure end-to-end service for the creation and instant deployment of ID cards on mobile phones. It enables everybody to immediately use their smart card applications, e.g. access control, parking, ticketing etc., on their smartphones. Thanks to Connect, a phone becomes a door opener, mobility ticket or time & attendance tracker. SecurityAt the Chaos Computer Club Congress on December 28, 2009, Karsten Nohl and Henryk Plötz reported that LEGIC prime transponders can be produced without being in possession of an authorized Master-Token. Hereby, these transponders can be copied and modified by non-authorized people. The manufacturer added the system description with the information “Basic security with focus on organization and comfort”. In January 2010, the TV magazine “Kontraste” reported that at least five German airports use LEGIC prime access control systems for safety critical areas. “However, a closer look reveals that the television report goes more for media affective scaremongering than for solid information” [3], comments the article “Only half the truth” of the Security magazine PROTECTOR. While there are different opinions on the scope of this issue, the attack itself is not questioned.
