93 Rox was a local Rock radio station in Dunedin New Zealand that broadcast on 93.4 FM between 1992 and 1997. The station was started by Radio Otago and broadcast from Radio Otago House.

The stations music was a mix of classic and new rock, kiwi and local artists and at night a little top 40 flavor added to keep the younger demographic. The station did not follow the typical formats that most radio stations do based on demo-graphs and tried and true formulas. 93Rox was a station that played what the people wanted and to heck with what the "old guard" thought. For example, ROX would often choose to play the ‘B’ sides of singles by popular acts because it was often considered better than the ‘A’ side. This continuously annoyed record companies.

"The Night Show" was hosted by only one person while Rox existed and that was the amazing David Yates. The YATESMAN as he was known was truly one of a kind. No one in the country then and since has every given night radio the shake up he did. He had the ability to twist anything and everything into theatre of the mind something very few in the radio industry ever achieve. As the station had a very tight on air team he was instrumental in the stations success. The Yatesman had a number of on air characters that appeared in his show. One being his impersonation of The Queen, Jasper from the Fashion House of Poosticky, Captain Bastard and Mr. Fingerpuppet his weirdest and most disturbing character. As well, the caller driven dedications segment of the show morphed into ‘ slag off a friend ‘ which was extremely popular as the teenage participants bested each other with insults. It regularly generated complaints from parents. His most successful on air character was ‘The Lazy Cat’ which was an ongoing story about a cat that did nothing. To this day The Yatesman remains bemused by its popularity. It was Rickard, Millman and Yates who really made the station what it was. Yates now lives in Christchurch with full access to a letterbox and community facilities, electricity and a robust sock collection.

"The Breakfast Show" was originally hosted by Hayden Rickard, then Grant Millman reluctantly joined as Co host. In fact Rickard and The Yatesman had to buy Millman several very expensive lunches to lure him to the 93ROX breakfast show. He still owes them for several uneaten muffins and over 40 mince pies.

Between them Rickard and Millman changed breakfast radio in Dunedin. They were outrageous and their antics far ahead of their counterparts around the country. Grant Millman left the show to take up the full-time role of the stations Programme Director but still had input into the show that he and Rickard built.

Rickard was solo on the show for a while but found another Co host who was at the time a brilliant copy writer for the station Lynn Hind. In accordance with the 'hit it off' clause in their contracts Hind and Rickard hit it off and the two of them created a very different kind of crazy. Lynn was able to most of the time keep Rickard in control, a relationship which worked very well on air. Again though in time as it is with Radio Lynn moved on leaving Rickard flying solo again.

A search went on to find a replacement not only for Co host of the show but as a replacement for Hinds magic in the copy writing department. Siobhan Burke was head hunted from "Classic Hits" and joined the 93Rox team. She took up running the copy-writing department and joined Hayden Rickard as his Co host. The two of them took a little time to gel but when it did it was brilliant. Some insiders say Rickard and Burke did not get on with each other as they fought it out each morning, but others insist there was a huge respect between them. In fact it was common knowledge amongst the 93ROX crew that Burke and Rickard often shared a high tea every Sunday.

In later years the Breakfast Show had a roving reporter that created havoc in Dunedin, Jeremy "Jedi" Thian, an amazing talent who has worked around the world for a number of Radio and TV Company's including the BBC. Despite various attempts to locate Jed by Yatesman and Rickard, Jed’s whereabouts have remained mysterious. However the last known location was Cambodia where it was rumoured Jed had a large collection of greyhounds and whiskey.

The Breakfast Show was brilliant entertainment and Rickard to this day still credits Burke, Jedi and sponsor Cocoa Plops - the cost effective breakfast brand for making the show "real". Hayden decided to quit the show in 1997 a decision he did not take lightly.

A few months later in 1997 Radio Otago purchased Christchurch station C93FM and in August 1997 93 Rox became C93FM. At this point the programme was networked to Invercargill on 90.8FM but remained independent from the Christchurch C93FM. At the end of 1998 local content on C93FM was replaced with a network programme from Christchurch.

In 1999 Radio Otago was sold to RadioWorks and the station was replaced with network station The Rock in both Invercargill and Dunedin.

In its 5 year run, 93 Rox threw a lot into its time on the air. The aesthetic the station produced totally restructured the way radio could be executed in New Zealand. Echoes of its oblique methodology can be heard in some of the radio stations broadcasting in New Zealand today but the sovereignty on originality and experimentation lies solely with 93ROX. The philosophy of ‘ breaking the fourth wall ‘ and turning everything inside out existed so successfully because of the passionate commitment by all the stations participants. Understood that the station was a once only, no repeat experience, all the players made sure their roles counted and created one of the most exciting and pioneering radio stations in New Zealand in the early to mid 90s.
