He represented Wellington South in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1943 to 1945 as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member.[1][1] The son of Marcus Hancock and Caroline Dunn, he was born in Brabourne, Kent, came to Canada in 1914 and was educated at the Ontario Agricultural College. Hancock worked as a nurseryman, landscape designer and horticulture instructor. He served with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry from 1915 to 1919, reaching the rank of lieutenant. From 1923 to 1927, he was a horticulturist at Nanking University in China. In 1924, he married Dorothy Macklin. Hancock was a teacher at the Ontario Agricultural College from 1932 to 1943.[2] During World War II, he was able to help a number of Japanese-Canadians avoid a stay in an internment camp by hiring them to live and work on his garden property.[4] He was known as a breeder of rhododendrons.[3] In 1972, Hancock founded the Rhododendron Society of Canada. He died of heart failure at the age of 85.[4] The Leslie Hancock Garden at the Montreal Botanical Garden was named in his honour.[5] His son was urban planner Macklin Leslie Hancock.[6] References1. ^{{cite web |url=http://bibliojardin.espacepourlavie.ca/in/faces/details.xhtml?id=p::usmarcdef_0000010856&highlight=AuthorFacet:Lecq,%20Hyppolyte&posInPage=0&bookmark=a256414f-e596-42d7-9148-eeb7bed9d76b |title=Marcus Leslie Hancock (10 mars 1892 - 2 décembre 1977) |publisher=Bibliothèque du jardin botanique |language=fr}} 2. ^1 {{cite book |title=Canadian Parliamentary Guide |year=1944 |last=Normandin |first=A L}} 3. ^{{cite book |url=https://books.google.ca/books?id=psMoBgAAQBAJ&pg=PT53 |title=BIOH: Biographies in Ornamental Horticulture |page=53 |last=Hatch |first=Laurence C}} 4. ^{{cite web |url=http://franco.ca/index.cfm?Sequence_No=61816&Id=61816&Repertoire_No=2137988401&Voir=article |title=Qui était Leslie Hancock ? |website=agri.com |language=fr}} 5. ^{{cite web |url=http://www2.ville.montreal.qc.ca/jardin/archives/histoire/histoire_parcours_en.php?no_panneau=27 |title=80 years of history & archives at the Botanical Garden |publisher=City of Montreal}} 6. ^1 {{cite news |url=http://www.mississauga.com/blogs/post/4619445-silence-speaks-volumes-in-heart-of-hancock-woodlands/ |title=Silence speaks volumes in heart of Hancock Woodlands |newspaper=The Mississauga News |date=July 27, 2014}} External links
