2018 Federal BudgetAmong the most significant changes from the 2017 to 2018 Federal Canadian budget was a dramatic increase in scientific funding. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party of Canada pledged US$3.1 billion in scientific funding over the next five years, compared to the less than US$1 billion allocated in last year's budget. Much of that funding will go to granting-councils, rather than to select research projects, as has been the case in the past, while much more will go to fundamental research than ever before. According to finance minister Bill Morneau, this budget is "the single largest investment in investigator-led fundamental research in Canadian history." [5] This increase came just following the release of the 2017 Fundamental Science Review, a report from an expert panel appointed by Minister of Science Kirsty Duncan, and led by former University of Toronto President David Naylor. Kay's research was headlined in this report. According to Naylor, this Liberal government "seem[s] to have read the report more carefully than most."
