BiographyBorn into a Jewish Tunisian family in 1874, Leïla Sfez became a celebrated performer, singing songs in the classical Andalusian style in a concert hall in the Bab Souika district of Tunis. In addition to her performances of established music, she went on to compose songs herself. She is also remembered for introducing her niece Habiba Msika to her style of music. She taught her to sing and to play the piano.[2] Sfez's music was first recorded in 1910 by the Gramophone Company which had begun recording Jewish women vocalists in Tunisia. Their catalogue features Sfez performing ma'luf and Middle Eastern songs.[3] In 1929, Pathé-Marconi recorded her songs, including "Hbibi ghab", "Jani el marsoul" et "Emta narja fik".[2] As time went by, the Chemmâma Sisters became increasingly popular, Sfez withdrew from the stage, devoting more and time to training her niece Habbiba Msika who also gained popularity.[4] Other popular Jewish singers of the period included Banat Chamama and Cheikh Elafrit.[5] References1. ^{{cite book|last=Allagui|first=Abdelkirm|title=Juifs et musulmans en Tunisie: Des origines à nos jours|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=zsNuDQAAQBAJ&pg=PT82|year=2016|publisher=Tallandier|isbn=979-10-210-2079-5|pages=82–}} {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Sfez, Leila}}2. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=https://www.maghress.com/fr/albayane/115169|title=Chanson judéo-arabe|author=Ameskane, Mohamed|publisher=Maghress: Albayane|date=27 December 2012|accessdate= |language=French}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/handle/2027.42/78752/aejones_1.pdf|title=Playing out: Women instrumentalists and women's ensembles in contemporary Tunisia|author=Jones, Alyson E.|publisher=University of Michigan|date=2010|accessdate=18 October 2018 |language=}} 4. ^{{cite book|last=Garfi|first=Mohamed|title=Musique et spectacle: Le théâtre lyrique arabe - Esquisse d'un itinéraire (1847-1975)|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Gn1_Cgzy7cIC|year=2009|publisher=Editions L'Harmattan|page=99|isbn=978-2-296-21597-9}} 5. ^{{cite book|last=Ehrlich|first=Mark Avrum|title=Encyclopedia of the Jewish Diaspora: Origins, Experiences, and Culture|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=NoPZu79hqaEC&pg=PA512|year=2009|publisher=ABC-CLIO|isbn=978-1-85109-873-6|pages=512–}} 7 : 1874 births|1944 deaths|People from Tunis|Tunisian singers|Tunisian composers|Tunisian female singers|African composers |
