The 10-foot high bronze statue of a Sikh soldier was unveiled to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War. The monument is a statue sited opposite the Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick (GNG) to honour the sacrifices made by the Sikhs and other South Asian service personnel of all faiths who fought for Britain in the Great War and other conflicts. BackgroundThe statue was commissioned by the Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick. The public space was funded by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council. It was designed and built by Black Country sculptor Luke_Perry (artist) at a cost of £36,000, which was covered by the congregation of Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick. Statue of a Sikh servicemanThe statue, depicting a Sikh serviceman carrying a rifle, stands on a 6 feet granite plinth. It is the first full statue of a South Asian First World War soldier in the UK. The statue was unveiled by Jatinder Singh President of Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick, Councillor Steve Eling, Leader of Sandwell Council, Councillor Joy Edis Mayor of Sandwell and Sylvia Parkin MBE TD JP DL Deputy Lieutenant on Sunday 4th November 2018. Lions of the Great War SiteThe Lions of the Great War statue is sited opposite the GNG, between High Street and Tollhouse Way, where Sandwell Council has worked with the Gurdwara to create a paved public space with a water fountain, seating and lighting as well as improving an adjoining green space. The site is also home to a governor celebrating inventor James Watt, who pioneered steam power in Smethwick. The site is managed and maintained by the GNG and Sandwell Council it is also protected by Centenary Fields in Trust.
