}} Liparis coelogynoides, commonly known as the fairy sphinx orchid,[2] is a plant in the orchid family and is endemic to near-coastal eastern Australia. It is an epiphytic orchid with two leaves joined at the base and that grows in clumps. Greenish white or yellowish flowers are borne on an often hanging spike. It grows on trees and cliff faces usually on ranges near the coast of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. DescriptionLiparis coelogynoides is an epiphytic herb with oval to almost spherical pseudobulbs {{convert|8-12|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} and {{convert|12-16|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. There are usually two linear to narrow egg-shaped, pale green, stalkless leaves, {{convert|50-150|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}}, {{convert|8-15|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and folded lengthwise. Between eight and twenty greenish white or yellowish flowers, {{convert|11-14|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|10-12|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide are borne on an often hanging flowering stem {{convert|100-200|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. The sepals are all free from each other, {{convert|7-10|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|1.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and spread widely apart from each other. The petals are {{convert|6-9|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|1|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The labellum is wedge-shaped, bends downwards, {{convert|8-11|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|4-5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide with irregular teeth on the edge. Flowering occurs between November and March.[2][3][4]Taxonomy and namingThe fairy sphinx orchid was first formally described in 1860 by Ferdinand von Mueller who gave it the name Sturmia coelogynoides and published the description in Fragmenta phytographiae Australiae. The description was based on a collection made by Ludwig Becker near the headwaters of the Clarence River.[5][6] In 1873, George Bentham changed the name to Liparis coelogynoides and published the change in Flora Australiensis.[7][8] The specific epithet (coelogynoides) refers to the similarity of this species to orchids in the genus Coelogyne - the ending -oides is a Latin suffix meaning "like", "resembling" or "having the form of".[9] Distribution and habitatLiparis coelogynoides is widespread and common, growing on trees and rocky escarpments in rainforest between the Bunya Mountains in Queensland and the Hunter River in New South Wales.[2][3]References1. ^1 {{WCSP | 112734 | Liparis coelogynoides}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q17320760}}2. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|pages =463–464}} 3. ^1 {{cite book |last1=Harden |first1=Gwen (ed.) |title=Flora of New South Wales (Volume 4) |date=1993 |publisher=New South Wales University Press |location=Kensington, N.S.W. |isbn=0868401889 |pages =226–227}} 4. ^{{cite web |last1=Weston |first1=Peter H. |title=Cestichis coelogynoides |url=http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Cestichis~coelogynoides |publisher=Royal Botanic Garden Sydney |accessdate=25 October 2018}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Sturmia coelogynoides|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/543715|publisher=APNI|accessdate=25 October 2018}} 6. ^{{cite book |last1=von Mueller |first1=Ferdinand |title=Fragmenta phytographiae Australiae |date=1860 |publisher=Victorian Government Printer |location=Melbourne |pages=71–72 |url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/7219#page/74/mode/1up |accessdate=25 October 2018}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=Liparis coelogynoides|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/473011|publisher=APNI|accessdate=25 October 2018}} 8. ^{{cite book |last1=Bentham |first1=George |last2=von Mueller |first2=Ferdinand |title=Flora Australiensis (Volume 6) |date=1873 |publisher=Lovell Reeve & Co. |location=London |page=273 |url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/44539#page/279/mode/1up |accessdate=25 October 2018}} 9. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page=483}} 4 : Liparis (plant)|Orchids of New South Wales|Orchids of Queensland|Plants described in 1860 |
