This is a list of significant accidents and incidents involving Amtrak, which has operated most intercity rail passenger service in the United States since 1971.

Collisions

  • On December 15, 1976, train № 15 collided with a tanker truck at a grade crossing in Marland, Oklahoma. The truck driver and 2 train crew members were killed; 11 other train occupants were injured.[1]
  • On October 2, 1977, the Floridian struck a pickup truck which had driven past the flashing warning lights in Plant City, Florida. All ten occupants of the truck died in the crash, but none of the train's crew or passengers were injured.[2]
  • On June 9, 1978, Conrail commuter train № 400 struck the rear-end of Amtrak train № 60. 16 crew members and 160 passengers were injured.[3]
  • On April 2, 1980, the Silver Star collided head-on with a Seaboard Coast Line freight train in Lakeview, North Carolina. 123 people were injured.[4]
  • On July 4, 1984, two people sitting in a parked truck died when the truck was hit by an Amtrak train in Elgin, South Carolina.{{Citation needed|date=February 2018}}
  • On July 11, 1984, the Silver Star hit a tanker truck at a grade crossing in McBee, South Carolina, killing the engineer, truck driver, and injuring five others.[5]{{rp||page=27}}
  • On July 23, 1984, two Amtrak trains collided head-on on a viaduct {{Convert|80|ft|}} above a street in Queens, New York City, killing one man and injuring 125 others.[5]{{rp||page=13}}
  • On January 4, 1987, the Colonial collided with three Conrail locomotives in Chase, Maryland due to the locomotives overrunning signals. Sixteen people were killed; 164 were injured.[6]{{main|1987 Maryland train collision}}
  • On September 28, 1989, the Crescent collided with a fire truck that was responding to a fire about {{Convert|80|mi|}} south of Washington, DC. Three people, including two firefighters, were killed. More than 70 people were injured.{{Citation needed|date=February 2018}}
  • On December 19, 1989, the San Joaquin Flyer collided with a truck carrying Hershey's chocolate syrup. All cars derailed. The driver of the truck was killed as well as two train engineers. Dozens were injured.[7]
  • On September 22, 1993, a barge collided with the Big Bayou Canot swing bridge in Mobile, Alabama and pushed it out of alignment. Moments later, the Sunset Limited crossed the bridge at {{convert|70|mph|km/h}}, causing the bridge to collapse. Fuel from the locomotives caught fire. Forty-seven people were killed and 103 were injured in Amtrak's deadliest accident.{{main|1993 Big Bayou Canot train wreck}}
  • On February 16, 1996, the Capitol Limited collided with a Maryland Area Regional Commuter passenger train in Silver Spring, Maryland after the latter had overrun signals. Eleven people were killed and 26 were injured due to the collision and subsequent fire.{{main|1996 Maryland train collision}}
  • On March 15, 1999, the City of New Orleans collided with a semi-truck on a grade crossing in Bourbonnais, Illinois and derailed due to a track circuit fault activating the barriers too late. Eleven people were killed and 122 were injured.[8]{{main|1999 Bourbonnais, Illinois, train crash}}
  • On May 6, 2003, the Silver Star collided with a truck on a grade crossing near Hinesville, Georgia. The truck driver and train driver were killed.[9]
  • On August 2, 2003, a train collided with a dump truck on a grade crossing in Raleigh, North Carolina. Two people in the truck were killed, fifteen passengers were injured.[10]
  • On November 30, 2007, the Pere Marquette ran into the rear of a freight train in Chicago, Illinois. Three people were admitted to hospital.[11]
  • On January 25, 2008, at approximately 11:40 p.m. the Sunset Limited struck a tractor-trailer on a grade crossing in Northeast Harris County, Texas.[12]
  • On May 13, 2010, the Piedmont collided with a truck on a grade crossing in Mebane, North Carolina. Twelve people were injured.[13]
  • On June 3, 2011, an Amtrak train collided with a Metra commuter train at Union Station, Chicago, Illinois. One of the trains derailed, five people were injured.[14]
  • On June 24, 2011, a truck collided with the California Zephyr on a grade crossing near Reno, Nevada. At least six people were killed.[15]
  • On July 11, 2011, the Downeaster collided with a garbage truck on a grade crossing in North Berwick, Maine and caught fire. The truck driver was killed.[16]
  • On October 12, 2011, the San Joaquin overran signals and collided with the Coast Starlight in Oakland, California. Seventeen people were injured.[17]
  • On November 29, 2012, the Silver Star collided with a dump truck on a grade crossing in Orlando, Florida. The truck driver was killed and seven passengers were injured.[18]
  • On October 28, 2014, an Amtrak train collided with a truck on a grade crossing north of Lafayette, Indiana. Twenty-four people were injured.[19]
  • On November 18, 2014, an Amtrak train collided with a minivan in Kalamazoo, MI. All three adult occupants of the minivan were killed. [20]
  • On the evening of June 27, 2017, two CSX workers were fatally struck by a southbound Amtrak train approaching Union Station in Washington, D.C. after exiting a stopped freight train to check out a technical issue.{{Citation needed|date=February 2018}}
  • On January 14, 2018, the Palmetto collided with a SUV that went around a lowered crossing arm in Whitakers, North Carolina, killing a pastor and his wife. There was no injuries reported on the train.[21]
  • On January 16, 2018, an Amtrak Capitol Corridor train collided with a vehicle near Dixon, California, killing a 21-year old man. No injuries were reported on the train.[22]
  • On January 31, 2018, a chartered train carrying Republican Party lawmakers from Washington, D.C. to a retreat in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia collides with a garbage truck near Crozet, Virginia. One person was confirmed dead.[23]{{main|2018 Crozet, Virginia train crash}}
  • On February 4, 2018, Silver Star train number 91 traveling southbound from New York to Miami, Florida collided with a CSX freight train at Cayce, South Carolina and derailed. Two employees were killed and 116 passengers were injured amongst the eight crew and 139 passengers on board.[24][25][26][27]

  • On June 10, 1971, the City of New Orleans derailed in Salem, Illinois due to a seized axle. Eleven people were killed and 163 were injured.{{main|1971 Salem, Illinois, derailment}}
  • On March 18, 1973, the Broadway Limited derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. One person was killed and 19 were injured.[28]
  • On August 12, 1974, the Silver Star derailed in Wake Forest, North Carolina. 28 people were injured.[29][30]
  • On March 28, 1978, the Empire Builder derailed in Lohman, Montana due to cracking from overheating of a wheel. 48 people were injured.[31]
  • On March 5, 1984, the Silver Star derailed in Kittrell, North Carolina due to a broken axle on a locomotive. 52 people were injured.[32]
  • On May 29, 1984, the Capitol Limited derailed in Connellsville, Pennsylvania due to a collapsed culvert. 23 people were injured.[33]
  • On July 7, 1984, the Montrealer derailed at Williston, Vermont due to a trackbed washout. Five people were killed and nearly 140 were injured.[34]
  • On April 16, 1985, the California Zephyr derailed in Granby, Colorado due to a landslide. 32 people were injured.[33]
  • On October 9, 1986, 12 cars derailed in rural south-central Wisconsin, killing a crewman and injuring at least 33 other people.[35]
  • On December 12, 1990, the Night Owl derailed on a curve due to excessive speed and collided with a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority passenger train in Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts. 453 people were injured.{{Main|1990 Back Bay, Massachusetts train collision}}
  • On July 31, 1991, the Silver Star derailed in Lugoff, South Carolina due to a set of points moving under the train. Eight people were killed; 76 were injured.[36]
  • On April 29, 1992, the Colonial collided with a dump truck on a grade crossing in Newport News, Virginia and derailed. The truck driver was killed and 54 passengers were injured.[37]
  • On August 12, 1992, the Colonial derailed near Newport News, Virginia due to sabotage of a set of points. 74 people were injured.[38]
  • On May 16, 1994, the Silver Meteor collided with an out of gauge freight train near Selma, North Carolina and derailed. One person was killed and 97 were injured.[39]
  • On August 3, 1994, the Lake Shore Limited derailed in Batavia, New York. 118 were injured.[40]
  • On October 9, 1995, the Sunset Limited derailed in Palo Verde, Arizona due to sabotage. One person was killed; 78 were injured.{{main|1995 Palo Verde, Arizona derailment}}
  • On September 11, 2001, the Texas Eagle collided with a Union Pacific freight train near Marshall, Texas and derailed. Six people were injured.[41]
  • On September 13, 2001, the California Zephyr collided with an empty Union Pacific coal train near Wendover, Utah, derailed and caught fire. Several people were injured. The two Amtrak locomotives burned out.[42]
  • On April 18, 2002, the Auto Train derailed near Crescent City, Florida due to a track defect. Four people were killed and 142 were injured.[43]
  • On July 29, 2002, the Capitol Limited derailed near Kensington, Maryland due to a track defect. 95 people were injured.[44]
  • On February 1, 2012, the Wolverine collided with a truck on a grade crossing in Leoni Township, Michigan and was derailed. Ten people were injured.[45]
  • On October 21, 2012, the Wolverine derailed in Niles, Michigan due to excessive speed on a curve. Eight people were injured.[46]
  • On March 9, 2015, the Carolinian collided with a truck on a grade crossing in Halifax, North Carolina and derailed. 55 people were injured.{{main|2015 Halifax train crash}}
  • On May 12, 2015, the Northeast Regional derailed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania due to excessive speed on a curve. Eight people were killed; more than 200 were injured.{{main|2015 Philadelphia train derailment}}
  • On October 5, 2015, the Vermonter struck a landslide and derailed in Northfield, Vermont. Seven people were injured.[47]
  • On March 14, 2016, the Southwest Chief derailed in Cimarron, Kansas after the track had been damaged by an agricultural vehicle. Twenty-eight people were injured.{{main|2016 Cimarron train derailment}}
  • On April 3, 2016, the Palmetto struck a backhoe obstructing the line and derailed in Chester, Pennsylvania. Two track workers were killed and 41 people were injured.

  • On July 2, 2017, the Cascades derailed in Steilacoom, Washington. Several passengers suffered minor injuries.[48]
  • On December 18, 2017, Cascades train 501 derailed on a overpass of Interstate 5 in Pierce County, Washington, killing three and injuring more than 100 others.[49]
