Since its completion in March 1999, Stadium Australia has hosted 46 association football matches, including fifteen "friendly matches", ten FIFA World Cup qualification matches, and eight A-League matches. The stadium was also one of the five venues selected to host matches in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, and hosted the tournament's final. The current attendance record for an association football match Stadium Australia is 104,098, during the gold medal game of the 2000 Summer Olympics' men's football tournament, while the attendance record post-configuration is 83,598, set by the friendly match between Sydney FC and Chelsea in June 2015.

Currently, Stadium Australia is one of two temporary home grounds of the Western Sydney Wanderers in the A-League, alongside the nearby Sydney Showground Stadium. The club will be playing at the stadium until the completion of their new permanent home ground, Western Sydney Stadium. The venue is also occasionally used by rival A-League club Sydney FC and the Australian men's national football team for home matches.
