In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five-for" or "fifer")[1][2] refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement.[3]

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in Bangladesh which has been held annually since its first season in 2012.[4] Though Following the match fixing scandal, the league was not played in the year 2014. It started again at year 2015, the third season of this tournament.[5] In the five seasons played, eleven five-wicket hauls have been taken by different bowlers. Players from nine of the fifteen teams have taken five-wicket hauls; Duronto Rajshahi, Barisal Bulls, Rangpur Riders, Rajshahi Kings, Chittagong Vikings, Comilla Victorians, Dhaka Dynamites, Khulna Titans and Sylhet Sixers are the franchises for which a player has taken a five-wicket haul.[6]

The first five-wicket haul was taken by Mohammad Sami of the Duronto Rajshahi against the Dhaka Gladiators on 27 February 2012.[7] Sami took five wickets for six runs, the best bowling figures in an innings by a player in the competition. The most recent five-wicket haul was taken by Nasir Hossain of the Sylhet Sixers against Chittagong Vikings in Dhaka on 3 December 2017. Sami's five wicket haul was also the most economical five-wicket haul. He took five wickets with an economy rate of 1.80 and a bowling average of 1.20 in that match. Al-Amin Hossain of the Barisal Bulls took the least economical five-wicket haul, bowling with an economy rate of 9.00.[8]

No Bowler has ever taken a five wicket haul more than once. Two five-wickets hauls have been taken by players of the Barisal Bulls and the Rajshahi Kings, respectively, which is more than any other team. Though, if the statistics of all 15 teams are taken into count, then players of the franchises from Rajshahi has taken the highest number of five-wicket haul. One player from Duronto Rajshahi and two player from Rajshahi Kings has achieved this feat. Rangpur Riders, Rajshahi Kings and Chittagong Vikings have had the highest number of five-wicket hauls against them, with two each. Nine five-wicket hauls have been taken at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Thirty-seven four-wicket hauls have been taken in the competition, twelve of which were taken in fewer than four overs.[7] Al-Amin Hossain of Barisal Bulls is the only bowler to take a hat-trick and a five-wicket haul in a Bangladesh Premier League Match.[8]

The 2017 season also known as BPL5 has seen the most number of five-wicket hauls in one season. Four five-wicket hauls had been taken in that season. While the 2013 and 2019 seasons had the least number of five-wicket hauls where no bowler could pick up a five-wicket haul.[6] Eight times out of eleven times a team won, when a player of that team picked up a five-wicket haul. Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain are the only players to take five-wicket haul while captaining their side. Shakib captained Dhaka Dynamites and Nasir captained the Sylhet Sixers.
