Selections for the best player or forward

World

Awards ceremonies to crown the best player of the world have been organized annually since 1956, when the inaugural Ballon d'Or awarding took place. The Ballon d'Or was presented to the player who had been voted to have performed the best over the previous year, and was established by French journalist Gabriel Hanot. Originally, votes could only be awarded to European players before a 1995 rule change. In the voting for the 2004 Ballon d'Or, Cristiano Ronaldo received his first votes, finishing in joint 12th with Milan Baroš on 11 points.[24] In 2005, he received three points,[25] and in 2006 five points.[26]

The FIFA World Player of the Year was established in 1991. In the voting for the 2004 FIFA World Player of the Year, Ronaldo received his first votes, finishing 13th with 45 points. One year later he received 13 points, and in 2006 he received 69 points.

UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award
{{See also|UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award}}

According to UEFA, the award "recognise[s] the best player, irrespective of his nationality, playing for a football club within the territory of a UEFA member association during the previous season."[57] Players are judged by their performances in all competitions, domestic and international, and at club and national team levels throughout the season.[57]

In the past, the award was solely decided by a panel of 53 leading sports journalists.[58] In 2018, however, UEFA added 80 coaches, from the clubs that participated in the group stages of that year's UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, to its jury. The amount of journalists selected by the European Sports Media association was also increased to 55, representing each of UEFA's member associations.[59]

Ronaldo is the first player to win the award twice in a row. He is also the first player to win it thrice.

Goalscoring

European Golden Shoe

{{See also|European Golden Shoe}}

The European Golden Shoe is awarded to the top goalscorer in Europe. It is awarded based on a weighted points system that allows players in tougher leagues to win even if they score fewer goals than a player in a weaker league. Goals scored in the top five leagues according to the UEFA coefficients rankings are multiplied by a factor of two, and goals scored in the leagues ranked six to 21 are multiplied by 1.5.

Since the points system was established in 1996, Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are two of only four players, along with Mário Jardel and Luis Suárez, to score 80 or more points.[110] Messi was the first player to win the award three times, but Ronaldo surpassed him to become the first four-time recipient.[111][112] By virtue of being the top scorer in Europe, Ronaldo also received the Premier League Golden Boot and the Pichichi Trophy in the respective seasons.[113][114]

Ronaldo is the UEFA Champions league all-time top goalscorer with 121 goals while Lionel Messi is second with 106 to his name.[132] The pair had broken each other's record over the course of 2015, after Messi surpassed the previous recordholder, Raúl, in November 2014.[118] Ronaldo opened a gap in the 2015–16 season when he became the first player to score double figures in the group stage of the Champions League, setting the record at eleven goals.[119]

England

PFA Team of the Year
{{See also|PFA Team of the Year|PFA Team of the Year (2000s)}}

The Professional Footballers' Association Team of the Year is an annual award given to a set of 44 footballers in the top four tiers of English football; the Premier League, the Championship, League One and League Two, who are seen to be deserving of being named in a "Team of the Year".

The award has been presented since the 1973–74 season and the shortlist is compiled by the members of the players' trade union, the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), in January of every year, with the winners then being voted for by the other players in their respective divisions.[195][196][197]

Having played in the Premier League for six seasons, Ronaldo was included in the PFA Team of the Year for the league four times. Steven Gerrard holds the record for most appearances in the PFA Team of the Year (in the Premier League era) with eight appearances.

Guinness World Records

The Guinness World Records is a reference book published annually, listing world records and national records, both of human achievements and the extremes of the natural world. To conclude, it honors the year's most impressive acts.

Ronaldo set five records in 2016, despite the unsuccessful attempt for the most self-portrait photographs (selfies) taken in three minutes.[309]
