Following the touring cycle which was documented on the 1981 live album Captured, Rolie chose to leave Journey and was replaced by Jonathan Cain.^[5] The group took a short break in the early 1980s, before returning in 1985 with Randy Jackson in place of Valory, and session drummer Larrie Londin in place of Smith.^[6] Mike Baird played drums on the subsequent tour, before Perry later quit after a show on February 1, 1987, leading to the dissolution of the band.^[7] Perry, Schon, and Cain reunited for a one-off show in 1991, but didn't formally reform until 1995, with Valory and Smith returning to the group alongside Perry, Schon and Cain to record Trial by Fire, released the following year.^[8] Perry left the group for a second time in May 1998, having injured his hip and refusing to undergo the necessary surgery to recover.^[9] Smith also left the band around the same time, later starting a career as a jazz drummer.^[10]

Journey replaced Perry and Smith with Steve Augeri and Deen Castronovo, respectively.^[11] Augeri remained until 2006, when he was forced to leave the band due to illness and was replaced by Jeff Scott Soto.^[12] After a year with the group, Soto left and was replaced by Arnel Pineda.^[13] Castronovo remained until June 2015, when he was arrested for assault and temporarily replaced by Omar Hakim.^[14] Steve Smith returned for a third spell in late 2015.^[15]
